Air cooling Vs. No air cooling
    #451070 - 07/25/10 01:42 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Looking at a 400W HPS and I was wondering if its worth spending a bit more money to get an Air cooled reflector instead of a stock standard one.

What are the benefits?

My grow space will be a pretty average garden shed with no insulation, I'm not going to be running any exhaust, but I figured the space is big enough for any heat generated by the 400 to be dissipated into the air.

My space is about 3.5Ft-7Ft-6Ft

That will need to be air cooled. I have a storage area room that is 20x20 and 7ft tall and it brought the temp up 10-15 degrees. Air-cooled is the way to go because you can get the light much closer to the plant.

Air cooled has changed things alot for me.
Winter grows use less electricity but summer grows have more humidity. Will learn to deal with it.

We're pretty lucky here with low humidity through most of summer, and hopefully this cooltube will help keep the heat to a manageable temperature :awehigh:

Air cooled is the way to go, no doubt.

But just to point out a few things, that room is mighty big for a 400, two would be better for a room that size, or better yet two 600s.

You say you aren't going to run any exhaust, why?

I ask because fresh air is very important to your plants, or do you plan on running some sort of ozone generator?

The space is large but I'm only having 2 plant's and I wont be using the whole room, I'm going to build a light lock, dividing the room pretty much into half.

I'm also using the light for some smaller flowers and things I want to get a head start on before summer.

The main reason I won't be using exhaust is the money issue at the moment, I would love to get one, and hopefully I will, but I just cant afford it right now. I will have fans circulating the air, do you think It would do without the exhaust for a few weeks while I get some funds?

Use cfls for veg while you save up for air-cooling. I built my veg set-up all from thrown out, recycled, or cough stolen cough sources.

Yea I looked into those, but the ones I found were way out of my price range.

I ended up getting one of these:

Hey Magash,
Have you seen anyone DIY a water cooled hood yet. I have thought about just whipping out the old blow torch and some sheet glass and roll my own out but I would rather use something less breakbale.

BTW sorry not trying to jack the thread just curious

The closest I've seen is a glass coil around the bulb with a hose at each end. One end connected to a pump and the other goes back to the water reservoir.

Just imagine a large hollow glass spring around the bulb.
