I uploaded a avatar from a site and when I try to make it mine it says not the right kind of file but it is a gif pic. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this and if they know how to fix the problem.

Open the file with an image editor that can handle .GIF files (like IrfanView), and save it as a .GIF file with a new name.
Try uploading the new file and see if that works.

I lose the animation when I tried that, kind of why I want it.

The Ythanery sites don't allow animated .GIF's anymore, at least, not if they are over a certain size.
Maybe that's the problem.
My av stopped being animated two years ago.

I figured it out. Supporters get a bigger sized avatar. I had to go into properties of the pic and unblock it in there at the bottom where it says security , then upload it, then it let me do it. This is if you have XP, not sure if it is this way for Vista or 7. There is others who have animated avatars even regular members. Do not link to a site that has avatars, save it to your computer and then upload it here. I do thank you for your advice, I never would have checked the properties and found that so I thank you and hope you and yours have a good one
