passive intake(s)
    #443093 - 07/07/10 04:02 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

in regard to passive intakes in a homemade grow box or wardrobe/closet. would it be better to have 1 large intake hole or several smaller intakes.

i had a look around but couldnt really find a definitive answer.

would it even make a difference in a small grow area 3x3?

Not really gonna make a difference if the holes add up to the same area. I would just do one larger one, and then stick a piece of cotton batting or other filter material on there to keep from pulling in hairs, dust, and debris.

I would actually say use multiple smaller ones, as long as you can keep them fairly lightproof.  You want the air filtering up through the plants and out the top of the box so you probably want to cover as much area with air movement as possible for the best FAE.

I agree with Inverted, with one addition: if you're going to do a bunch of holes, do an extra one or two to compensate for the extra friction.

For example, a 6" hole has an area of 28.3 square inches.  If you wanted the equivalent in 2" holes, you'd need nine of them.  But the perimeter of the 6" hole is 19 inches, while all the perimeters of the nine 2" holes combined is 57 inches.  That's a big difference, and a lot of your incoming air will get all caught up on the friction of the walls of your holes, resulting in functionally "smaller" hole.  Solution?  Use ten 2" holes, or eleven if you wanna be hardcore.

P.S.  Another rule of thumb I've read often with passive intakes is to make the area of the intake 10-20% larger than that of the exhaust.  This helps to compensate for all of the friction of your room's walls, as well as plants, etc.
