Becoming a Primary Caregiver
    #304568 - 10/27/09 03:35 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I was looking into some of the medical marijuana communities on the net which are WA based.
It's not exactly bustling from what I've seen.

But I was thinking... A service that tried to hook up MMJ patients with people like me who want to grow would be fantastic.

It would alleviate the problems of "Able to smoke, illegal to buy" and of course, make my operation legit...

Is there anything like this in CA?
Is there something like this here I might've just missed?

WA...
From what I've read a patient can designate one person to be their primary caregiver, whether they have a recommendation or not...

The caregiver's just not supposed to use it if they don't have a card...

Not in California.  I don't know the structure of WA's medical marijuana laws, but in California, it is perfectly feasible to provide growing services to interested patients.

You will need to keep record of all your member's personal information and up-to-date recommendation (verified with the licensed physician who made the recommendation every 12 months minimum).  You also need to charge reasonable fees.  I do not believe the $60 eighths available at most dispensaries qualifies as reasonable, which is why the district attorney of Los Angeles is starting to put pressure on dispensaries for operating outside the scope of the state sanctioned medical marijuana program.

But if you are personal (service a limited number of patients), don't overcharge, pay your taxes and keep accurate records, you shouldn't face much of a problem here in California.  You will want to be careful where you operate, as some counties and cities are much more tolerant than others.

See, that's another thing... I can't see charging too much more than maintenance and upkeep... electricity and gear right?

Also... I don't mean being a bonafide dispensary... The law around here (And I thought in CA too) was that an individual primary caregiver can only have one patient, and the patient can only have one PG. The PG CAN be a MMJ "cardholder" though, but then they can't have a caregiver either...

That make sense?  I could be wrong too, but that's how I understand it.

I just think it'd be nice if there were some forum-type service that hooked people up, because there's only something like 11 dispensaries in WA and it's illegal to purchase statewide, but the law is clear and simple about the 'cardhold/grower' 'duos'

In MT but still applies I think.
I have had a few caregivers and interviewed more than I thought were out there. My first one had prior drug charges and basically called out of the blue said he couln't do it anymore because he was in trouble so my card came back with no caregiver(took almost 4 months to get it the first time) I was unhappy but what can you do but go find another one right?

So interviewing seemed like a good idea and let me tell you something I couldnt find one person who even came off as even semi legit and my standards for legit are pretty low. I heard it all from "if you only want an 8th a month I'll give it to you for free just make me your caregiver" and " git yer girlfriend signed up to thats like a free gift to me" lol assholes

Finally I found an honest person, who incidentally had worse encounters than I did so we were both on the same page, I truly am very lucky to find a good one so I know they do exist. Hopefully I will get my new card before christmas eh.

I am by no means saying you would be anything like this but if people want to interview you thats prolly why

*call a lawyer for your law information if you have any doubt

See, that's the kind of process that would be ten times easier if there were some kind of directory or something...

Glad You found your caregiver though finally.

How did you find potential caregivers though? Just asking around or did you put an ad out?

Thanks for sharing a real life scenario for us too Mud... Good luck with your treatment.

That sounds like a success story I suppose... I had to read that like 3 times, but it sounds like you've got a pretty good deal going on.

I was wondering about the pricing too.... 1/2 price sounds okay I guess.. still seems like it doesn't really need to be that expensive though...
I was thinking a good price would be like, cover the extra electricity, maybe a bit for materials and equipment (soil, nutrients, lady bugs, etc) and then here's however much you think you need for a month or something... Like, pay a monthly bill to them basically, get a certain amount of product, and if you want more than that THEN pay like 1/2 or whatever.

Maybe that's too complicated I dunno...

So were the 'caregiver circles' advertised?  Or how were they organized?  Was it just a group of kids that just kinda 'knew' eachother through friends of friends basically?

That's also something really cool that I never thought about before researching medical cannabis; the effects of different genetics which are useful in different ways... That's cool you've got that part figured out with them too...

Thanks for sharing your experience Mud.

Your state should a forum or board up for caregivers and patients to find eachother, discuss growing, and laws.

Yeah, I agree... that was basically the reason I started this thread, to see if there were that kind of forum around and I just missed it or something...

That would be kinda cool if it were state run.. although it'd be better if it wasn't.

WA is just in its infancy regarding mmj.. it's getting better everyday.  I just found a club in my town even..

There is a lot of talk and a lot of opinion on the next step to take towards legalization.

I hope we can come together and work through this.
