Hawaiian Snow seedling problems
    #394200 - 04/01/10 09:13 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Hello everyone.. I apologize for not filling out the form that I should have filled out, unfortunately my plants are not in reach for me to take some of the observations. So I thought I'd just tell you what I know for now, and provide some pictures. I will add the form tomorrow.

My plant is about three weeks old. It is the Hawaiian Snow strain from Greenhouse Seeds, the growing medium is Miracle Grow potting soil. I have three 42 watt CFL's above it now. At first it was being watered without testing the pH of the soil or the water. I believe that maybe that is what caused my problems...

Today I watered the plant with water with a pH of 4. It lowered the medium to a pH of 5.5. This is what I was aiming for because the seed company website recommends a pH of 5.5. I'm hoping this will fix my problems.. I cant think of much else that could be wrong.. But thats why I'm here! I know that someone can help me out! Thank you for reading..

oh boy oh boy.... probably not a pH problem, sorry to tell you. Also, the 5.5 is for hydro, soil you want it to be around 7. I hope this doesn't cause any problems for you....

to me it looks like you spilled water on the leaves and that the lights burned it, but with only 120W of cfl's that doesn't seem likely.

Is it that yellow IRL or is it just your camera?

Are you sure that pH is for hydro? In the video on the seed company website it looks like they are growing in soil.. I don't see any hoses or any other buckets around the plant. But if this isn't the case, then what is? I haven't gotten water on the leaves, and like you said it would take a little more light for it to burn my plant that bad.

Yes, it is fairly yellow.. Partly from the camera also though.. The leaves are more light green IRL. The veins are fairly dark green, and the tips of the leaves are almost bronze looking. From the research that I have done, these are symptoms of some micro nutrient deficiencies. Since I used potting soil that has nutrients in it though, I thought it would most likely be the pH, as I have read that sometimes when the pH is off the plant will show signs of nutrient deficiencies. What about the water? Could my tap water be killing it? I have grown plenty of bag seed with the exact same method, every time green and beautiful. This time, not so much luck... Could it be the strain is picky?

Many times in videos they will use what you call a soil-less mix, its usually composed of peat and perlite. If they didn't tell you directly, this mix will "look" just like soil.

So guys... where do I go next? Does anyone recommend going soil-less?

I do yes. Everything in my signature was grown soilless, and I find it to be a very simple and effective way to grow.

With the size of that plant you could probably still transplant it into a soilless mix, just gently wash off the roots and try to get as much soil as possible before transplanting. I would recommend either coir, or hempy buckets. hempy's are a mix of perlite and vermiculite in about an 8:1 ratio. That's the method I use and it literally could not be simpler

Sweet.. I'll try that out then. In your signature, what do you have the plants in? Besides the soil-less mix.. They look like rockwool cubes? But the ones are your larger plants are huge, what's goin on with that?

A bunch of us, harry and myself included, grow hempy style.  Which is just a big bucket filled with a perlite/verm mixture.  The rockwool cubes you see in harry's photos were probably what he used to propagate the cuttings/seeds.  Once you root something you just dump it in the hempy bucket and let it grow

Is it okay to use fish emulsion to fertilize the plant in the hempy buckets?  Or do I need to purchase hydroponic solutions in order to get nutrients in the medium?

you can use organic fertilizers in hempy buckets.

A little late now but what you saw in the video if its the one I think it is with Arjan and Franko, they use rockwool crutons.

Can I suggest looking into the Floranova series nutes by GH, very simple and very productive.

Good luck

Yes.. That's exactly what I saw.. Thanks man. I've been researching the hempy buckets and will be ordering some nutes for the plants soon.. It's a bummer though, only three more seeds to go. Gotta do it right this time! Thanks for recommending the floranova products, those are what I planned on using. I have seen that people have had some nice success with that series. I think I'm going to go with what I had read HarryBa11 talk about in another thread I found on hempys. He says to use Floramicro and Florabloom I believe.. Have to check again to be positive. But I wanna thank you guys for helping me, even though I never filled that form out, I wouldn't have been able to the day after if I wanted to lol, my plant did not like that acidic soil.. Next time I post, I hope to be starting a grow journal instead of doctors diagnosis. Thank you all for being kind to fellow growers!

I've used both floramicro and florabloom (known as the "lucas formula") as well as Floranova grow and bloom both with great success. GH makes fantastic products

One more thing Frankers, the Floranova series and the 3 part floramicro, bloom ectect.. are different. The Floranova series is a 1 part, well here ill break it down.. in the Floranova line there is Floranova Grow, Floranova Bloom, 2 parts one for grow one for bloom..then they have things to compliment it which do so very well I can say, they are Floralicious Plus, FloraBlend, FloraNectar, Liquid KoolBloom and others which dont have to be used with just this series but were made to compliment it specifically. I use the whole line with Diamond Nectar during veg no Chi tho dont really see a need for that stuff, at least not for me.

I usto use the lucus formula but switched to the Floranova line however they both preform very well.
