My 42' LCD TV started making a noise from the back
Kinda like the fan is knocking against something
but it even does it with the power unplugged
WTF
why would the fan run w/no power
what else could be making that noise

Tv's are capacitated and can hold a charge for long periods of time even if unplugged. A capacitor like in a lcd could potentially power a fan, or switch even when the power is off.

It holds enough power to kill you days maybe even weeks after you unplug it. It could be the tube?? My friends did a similar thing.

No I checked the TV it is definitely coming from the back of the TV.
Its coming from the bottom left corner

I dunno if lcd tv's have fans in them? I have a emerson 52 in. lcd and there is no fan on mine. I would tend to think you my have pests living in the body of the tv?
Is it a constant consistent noise like a cycle of a fan? Lcds produc some major heat at least mine does and it maybe the plastic expanding and contracting with the heat or coolness?
But better yet, if it is still under warranty take it back! Take it back to the store or whatever, trade it in for a new one.

It could be the florescent bulbs that are inside of them...You know how they make that hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm when they are abou to go out.

By the way you can check to see if thats it by turning down the bightness contrast etc...

Yea, it sounds just like a fan that is out of balance
and wobbling or touching something while it is running
I had it unplugged it while I slept
plugged it in and turned it on
and there is no noise ATM
I bet that once it gets hot
and the fan kicks on
it starts making that noise again

Sounds like a board defect in the TV.
Bad relays and what not can cause such a sound, that would come and go until it finally quits all together.
You should speak to the manufacture asap.

Here is a thought!
I woke up this morning to a weird noise sorta like the one you describe. It took me a while to find the noise but finally did. It was my dvd player that was left on and was making a skipping noise. I shut it off and the noise went away. Anyways, if you have a dvd player, cd player close by check them out. I swear it sounded quite a bit like a fan off balance as well.

Well, its been over 24 hours and the noise hasn't come back yet.
We had watched several movies and I hope it just got too hot.
