Brownies inquiry
    #33214 - 05/18/08 08:53 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

i have made pot brownies twice now, and i am a bit confused to one step during the process.
i was wondering if anyone knew how long it takes to let the oil (i used oil to extract the THC) to sit and simmer.
i of course didnt want to waste anything, and wanted it to work so i left it on for 3 hours.
when researching online it told me either long periods up to 24 hours, or simply 25 minutes.
anybody want to shed some light (so i dont spend a ridiculous amount of time baking)?

Ive only ever simmered the weed in oil for 1/2 hour max, most of the time less than 10 minutes because I dont strain it.. I just throw it right in..

A good fudge brownie mix will hide the weed taste pretty well and I believe that it makes them extra strong when you leave the weed in.

Getting sick from brownies is a tolerance issue. I know kids who made a batch of really strong brownies (used an ounce of some good stuff) and they got horribly sick. They never smoke they only eat it rarely. Being "too high" is possible, your friends probably had lower tolerances or ate more brownie. Too much THC will make you horribly sick your body will want to get rid of it just like too much alcohol.

does the body really treat thc like a poison and reject it though?

this is what doesn't sound right.

i've seen ppl throw up from knife hits of hash and edibles but i figured it was related to sumthing else.

Quote:

Studies of the distribution of the cannabinoid receptors in the brain explain why THC's toxicity is so low (i.e., the LD50 of the compound is so large): parts of the brain that control vital functions such as respiration do not have many receptors, so they are relatively unaffected even by doses larger than could ever be ingested under any normal conditions.

~ Wikipedia.org

Yes marijuana is technically "toxic" at nearly ungodly levels. Calling it a poison would be going too far.

Quote:

THC has mild to moderate analgesic effects, and medical cannabis can be used to treat pain. The mechanism for analgesic effects caused directly by THC or other cannabinoid agonists is not fully elucidated. Other effects include relaxation; euphoria; altered space-time perception; alteration of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses; disorientation; fatigue; and appetite stimulation. The mechanism for appetite stimulation in subjects is believed to result from activity in the gastro-hypothalamic axis. CB1 activity in the hunger centers in the hypothalamus increases the palatability of food when levels of a hunger hormone, ghrelin, increase as food enters the stomach. After chyme is passed into the duodenum, signaling hormones such as cholecystokinin and leptin are released, causing reduction in gastric emptying and transmission of satiety signals to the hypothalamus, respectively. Cannabinoid activity is reduced through the satiety signals induced by leptin release. It also has anti-emetic properties, and also may reduce aggression in certain subjects.

~Wikipedia.org

Obviously marijuana can affect our levels of nausea and our appetite. Normally it makes us feel less nausea and makes us feel more hungry. I think it is possible for it to go the other direction but am having trouble finding such studies. It seems like high doses is where these things go backwards.

Quote:

If you smoke marijuana, THC is quickly absorbed from your lungs into your bloodstream and rapidly distributed to most tissues and organs of your body. To eliminate THC, your liver converts the substance into waste products (metabolites). Most of these metabolites are excreted through the feces and urine. The rate at which they are cleared from your body is slower than that of many other psychoactive drugs. If you smoke marijuana regularly and then stop, THC can be found in your urine for more than 4 weeks after use.

Your liver treats alcohol just like it treats marijuana. It wants to get rid of them! I believe you vomit when you drink because your liver cannot metabolize the alcohol in your body quickly enough. I believe the same could be true for THC, think about it. Your body wants it gone and the normal process cannot do it quickly enough. So it tries to vomit the brownies which are continuing to digest releasing more THC which it wants to get rid of.

I am having trouble finding studies. I have heard stories. Much of marijuana study is first hand use and stories passed down because doing a study on marijuana requires federal approval in the states. Basically we don't completely understand it but we see the effects it can have.

Considering alcohol is FAR more toxic per unit weight than weed it's a bit of stretch to say it treats alcohol the same way.

Alcohol is also processed far quicker, meaning that even with a cumulative effect of THC, taking weeks to process, it doesn't even come close to toxic as alcohol, which could be consumed in high enough amounts to kill you in a few hours. Smoking non-stop for a week isn't lethal and has a much greater build up than a bottle or two of hard liquor.

I'm not saying equate high amounts of alcohol with high amounts of marijuana.

I'm saying that when your liver can't process whatever threat it perceives quickly enough vomiting is often the reaction. Alcohol is a good example because its much more common to vomit from. I'm saying its the same idea, too much THC from a brownie that is being digested? Then you will vomit just like if you drank too much alcohol. I'm saying too much of any substance that your liver doesn't like can produce vomiting. I've seen a few kids vomit from marijuana usually low-tolerance users taking big hits of good marijuana or eating too many brownies or just eat brownies that are too strong.

I am not saying alcohol = marijuana. I am not saying marijuana is nearly as toxic as alcohol. I am simply stating they can both make you vomit.
