Blue CFL
    #318045 - 11/18/09 07:05 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Okay so I have a couple of these, and have always wondered if they serve any cultivation purpose.

I'm assuming though that the visible spectrum of the bulb is far different than the actual Color Temperature (Degrees Kelvin)

I just wonder this because I know that during the vegetation cycle, the plants mostly use the blue color spectrum, and it appears that these lights put off exactly just that...  I can already predict some of the replies i'm going to get here.  :crazy2:

I'll post a pic for your viewing pleasure just to help you understand.

Any info is appreciated, as I'm mostly just curious about this.

I've never heard of a purpose for those in cultivation.  Personally, i wouldn't even fuck with cfl's (cause i dont have to!) let alone a blue one.  I've got a red one i bought for some reason years ago.  I also have a green one that I use for my night time work.  The green one doesn't fuck with the light cycle of the plants but im sure you know that.

I have a friend who is using two blue and one orange or it maybe red cfl in his veg room and it seems to work well.

A little slower growth rate and of course more stretch, but I'm sure you knew that already.

hmmm, take a look at how much light that last picture emits.  That shit isn't gonna cut it for cultivation just judging by the looks of it in that picture.

I don't like cfls myself.

Just stating what I have seen.

My friend is all like they're cheaper and shit, plus it's his grow so I don't argue the point.

I'll get some pics of his set up tomorrow, but they do work well.

He has three 100 watt outup, 22.5 watt cfl in a 1 foot 7 inch by 2 foot 2 inch veg area about 3 foot tall.

Those look like they are only 13 watts anyway.

I did know that shit but I was just curious if adding it just for the blue content would help at all.

I already have 120w (4 - 30w) of 3000K bulbs in there, which is more than enough right now for my veg.  The small one in the corner was a blue spectrum test i'm performing.  The 30w Reddish bulb will go back in a week, when I plan to switch my light cycle.

It's the HPS during flowering that will make all the difference, although I'm keeping the CFL's in there to supplement/aid lower branching.

well in metal halide used for vegg. has a high blue content to its spectrum to stimulate vegetative growth just like high pressure sodium lights have high yellow, orange, and red content to their spectrum to promote flowering....

id assume it might help with veg maybe?

I think they would be plausible to use if they were sold in higher wattages.

Either that or you'd have to put about 10 of them in there, but I do think it would be beneficial.

I put some 5700K bulbs in my box and after a few days more i'll see if a difference has been made, otherwise i'll switch back to the higher wattage red spectrum as they seemed to be doing fine anyways.
