why do people keep using MG?
I know it will work, but for the price, just buy some foxfarm OF or HF.
No need to use both perlite and verm, they serve the same purpose.

I don't understand the idea of going through all the time of growing a plant if you're just gonna get an ounce from the whole 3 month process.
Why not ditch the aerogarden and pick up a 400W HID setup?  I guarantee you can find a ballast, hood, bulb, and reflector for less than what that aerogarden/lights cost, and you'll EXPONENTIALLY increase your yield.

Tru dat 81.  Aerogardens are expensive.  If you wanna do a small scale aero setup try azshroomers links in his signature.  Or you could make the pipe in pipe method if you wanted to go even smaller.

Dude, buying an aerogarden to gain "experience" seems a little counter productive to me. Buying an aerograden, just looks to me like you want to grow bud the easy way. What are you going to do after your first grow? Grow in the woods? So your going to try and get soil growing experience out of a hydro system.

Plus, look through the grow log you just linked. This guy still had to setup additional lighting, and a fan. Bare in mind, you'll still need to light cycle it, so you'll need a room/closet for it.

I mean for the amount of trouble and money you have to pay and go through in addition to buying the aerogarden, it just seems like a waste IMO.

do yourself a favor and do not buy the aerogarden, DIY FTW!

I have to disagree with this....

initially yes both add porosity to the soil which is a plus, while perlite is completely inert and pH neutral and thus adds nothing to the soil but porosity, vermiculite is a highly expansive 2:1 clay (thus named for it's alternating sheets of octrahedral to tetrahedral) lattice layers in the silicate structure. it's laid out like this (* being 1 lattice form, & being the other)

****************
&&&&&&&&&&&&&
****************

****************
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
****************

all over the exterior and in between those alternating layers are highly charged cation exchange sites that basically grab onto various nutritive ions (mg+, ca^2+, NH4-, NO3-, K+ etc etc etc) and only release them when the proper proportion of H+ and OH- ions are available to displace them from their bonding sites (hence why poor pH can cause nutrient lockout; pH is a negative log function measuring concentration of H+ in solution).

basically what I'm saying is this; perlite helps your roots breath and improves drainage. Vermiculite actually stores water and nutritious particles so that the soil is actually feeding the plant much more vigorously at all times, and more nutrients are available for soil microfauna to digest and in turn produce more easily usable forms of mineralized ions.

I was not aware of that Harry.

It would seem that recycling a verm heavy soil would be a bad idea then.  Increasing nutrient deposits seem like they would lead to issues with salt accumulation in the soil if synthetic nutes were being used.
I've never used vermiculite in my soils, and now I won't;I constantly recycle my soils b/c they are compost heavy, and microlife  continue to digest the organic materials and release additional nutes.

Wouldn't the issues of poor pH be exacerbated by the presence of vermiculite?  If the ionic exchange was not optimal for nutrient release from the verm and the pH issue was then resolved, it seems that at that time the vermiculite would release a significant amount of nutritive ions into the soil, possibly burning the plants.

Thoughts?

Loved reading this.  Helluv high.  thanks for the info dude never knew that much about vermiculite.

Ren- you are absolutely correct about that. In natural systems with unusually high cation exchange capacities (CEC's) we find that over time we get either increased salinization or an abundance of plants that are capable of either excluding the salts from uptake, or actually completely reducing them in the soil via high osmotic potential and then consuming them.

Of course, florakleen and the like are specifically designed to flush those overly bonded ions out of the system, so if you do a good job flushing with a similar nutrient scrubbing solution then I'm sure you can reuse those soils without much issue.

Or you can go all natural. :yesnod:

That's great info, but I'm finding the visual image of you I now have and the words in threads somewhat incongruous now. :rofl:

hahah, I know right? :lol:  I look like a skinny little surf/ski bum, but in reality I'm an enormous nerd who just got a 97% on his graduate level Soil Biogeochemistry  midterm

don't worry, I get that a lot :wink:

Awesome. So much better than the cardboard box! :rofl2:

Yeah, its like when I saw you my brain went blank about every intelligent thing I've ever seen you post (no offense I hope) and I also went through that "pseudo" phase of conversation where people keep things very superficial and on topics they know are common ground for both of them.
Maybe next time we'll have time for a "real" conversation...
Maybe next time will be the MOD GATHERING!
