Is This Ethical?!
    #312809 - 11/08/09 10:28 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

My grandma is 77 years old with a raging case of dementia and Alzheimer's. She still recognizes me and my mother, but anything and everything you tell her will be forgotten in 5 minutes...no exceptions.

My mom and I are medical marijuana patients and both of us have heard of many cases of pot helping Alzheimer's and dementia, stopping its progress and possibly even slightly reversing the diseases. Unfortunately in my grandma's mind, a Volcano bag of vapor might as well be a dirty, bent syringe filled with black tar heroin. Thank you 1930s American Propaganda....

Anyway my question is this; what is your guy's opinions on the ethics of slipping a small amount of cannabutter into her food to see if it helps? Normally I would never give anyone any drug without their consent, but keep in mind she is a legal invalid, she does not have the capability to make the correct choices for herself. Thoughts? Am I a bad person for even thinking about this?

Edited for spelling.

Well, I think it mainly only helps in the early stages on Alzheimers, not the late ones (which is what your grandma is in).

I wouldn't do it, but thats just me.

I'm not expecting it to suddenly make her normal again, I should have mentioned that because of her dementia she experiences extreme anxiety and confusion. That's what I'm hoping it would help with.

What other option would there be besides feeding it to her? She won't smoke it, unless maybe if I told her it was tobacco lol.

VERY unethical in my opinion.  I like drugs and i would be pissed if someone dosed me with anything without my knowledge.

And somehow I doubt feeding her pot will make her less confused.

Dude she isn't as young as she use to be.

Even though she used to smoke cigarettes I don't think she'd smoke a joint even if I pulled all the tobacco out of a cigarette and packed it with weed, she didn't even chew the nicotine gum we got her when they were saying that might help dementia. If I decided it wasn't unethical I'd just give her something with cannabutter in it.

Dude, weed is good for preventing Alzheimers not helping with it. Once you have Alzheimers you have it. Its a brain disease and your brain is sensitive, it won't make her come back at all. But it might help it progress further. Possibly.

Read my second post, Trip. Also where did you hear it can progress it?
That is truly terrifying if it's true, according to The Emporer Wears No Clothes, Jack Herer says he gives his Alzheimer's-ridden grandma pot. My grandma's biggest problem is her dementia, the Alzheimer's is very mild in comparison, as I said, she can recognize us still.

Ah well that's all I'm after, that and some relief for her.

What if I just told her it was herbal butter with active therapeutic compounds that will help her anxiety? Is that still unethical?

Its un-ethical to not tell her yes. But I dont know if you are trying to be un-ethical.

Well I'm trying to be ethical, but it seems to me a possible reduction in her stress might be worth throwing my ethics to the wind.

Ya know, if I just told her it was cannabis or cannabis hemp, without mentioning the word marijuana, she would probably take it. I doubt she's ever even heard the word cannabis.

I would go for it.  Especially if she is being all anxious and shit just give her a small dose to chill her out.
