It's actually a sliding door from left to right.

Hmm...that may take some maneuvering to make light tight.

I have an idea. I need to sketch it up, but I'm on a long car ride. Will try to post tonight.

Does this door currently have a lock, and what sort, if so? If not, can you think of a way to lock it easily but inconspicuously (not a big obvious pad lock) when you get a new door?

I thought about this and the only way I could possibly lock it is to jerry-rig a lock that would go in a very awkward place. Basically, it's going to have to be an unsecure door that has anyone's access although I could jerry-up the inside. It's a very tight space to work with.

Are you comfortable with using this closet without a lock? I would think that'd be dangerous, but I don't know your living situation. If you're cool with it, I have an idea that I think would work fine. If not, we could help you design a stealth dresser or something instead.

I'm all ears on the stealth dresser. Is it possible to make it look nice though? I want it to be a handsome addition. Fashionably lean.

It can look however you want, you supply the dresser!

I recommend reading around on here a bit, then ask us any questions you might have.

Well what is an example of an exchange system that's all set to go that can be bought for a project of this nature?

-light
-fan

I thought there was a need for an exhaust system and that also had to have filters to it exhausts fresh air?

Harry's right, you just need light(s) and ventilation (a fan, whatever ducting is necessary). If you're looking for stealth, you'll also need odor control. Search this site for "DIY carbon scrubber."

I looked at some carbon filters and some air exchange systems. Ventilation is a major concern. I don't have an attic and the closest outdoor airway is 25' away.

If you filter the smell out of the exhaust air, you can covertly vent it into your house.

This sounds like the missing puzzle piece I need.

So how does one do that?

just google "DIY carbon Filter"

tons of great teks out there, and only takes about 30 minutes and $20 to build one sufficient for a small cab

So are you saying that that filter IS the in-room ventilation system itself?

Re: New grow unit systems (automated) [Re: World Spirit]
    #286445 -

no, the filter takes care of the smell, but it needs a fan to properly operate. basically teh fan is just responsible for pulling the air out of the room (ventilation system) and using the pressure created by the fan you push it through the filter which removes the smell, thereby making it safe to vent into your house

Sorry for all the questions. I'm very detail-oriented.

So the fan and the filter combined make up the ventilation system, true?

Knowing more about the needs of the organisms you wish to cultivate may help you understand the necessary equipment. Since you're detail-oriented, I'll post this for your or anyone else's benefit.

Since plants inhale CO2 and exhale O2, in a closed room they would eventually replace all the CO2 with O2. Then they would suffocate. Unfortunately, due to the legality of cannabis, a closed room is a must. Therefore, the "stale," O2-laden air must be replaced with "fresh," CO2-laden air.
Since (as you know) plants also need light, you'll need to supply that. Light bulbs produce heat as well as light; cannabis thrives best in the mid to upper 70s F, and in an enclosed room, your light is likely to raise the temperature above that range. Cooler air needs to be brought in, while warmer air is pumped out.
Since cannabis puts off an incriminating odor, any air that leaves the room must be filtered (there are other ways to get rid of the smell, but DIY carbon scrubbers are the best combination of effectiveness and thrift).

By using a fan to pull cool, fresh air into the room and push warm, stale air out through a filter, you're essentially killing three birds with one stone.
I suggest searching around for "perpetual cab," "stealth cab," or just "cab" to see what sorts of grows can be fit inside of cab(inet)s. Pay special attention to equipment used, how it's set up, and any justifications given for why/how. Ask if you have any questions.

I still have some reading to do. Quick question though: Is the air being "purified" and recycled right back into the unit below, are is the stale/used air exiting out of the cabinet?

The picture you posted looks like they have an air-cooled light hooked up to its own fan, and another fan controlling cab ventilation. Since that cab is pretty small, and that light is pretty hot, the heat would build up quick. They hooked up a duct pulling air from outside, through the light (search "cool tube"), and right back out of the cab. So the cool tube is its own closed system.
It looks like they're using a little computer fan on the back wall to bring in air for the plants. If a cab is small enough, a computer fan or two is often adequate. It's hard to tell from that picture, but they're probably using that computer fan to pull air in, and another fan up near the top to pull air out (at least, that's what I would do).
