Is it possible to tell the sex of a plant that is only 3-4 inches tall?
I was told by another grower that males tend to be tall and spindly with a few leaves, while females were short and bushy.
Anyone know if this is true, or do you have to wait till you change the lighting to 12/12?

From my experience, at this stage males are usually really tall and have a thin stem and females are short with a thicker stem and are bushier. This is why I think it's best to germinate several times the amount of seeds that you want to grow and just keep the shorter, bushier plants because the majority of them are likely to be female. This may not apply to all strains of weed and is not an effective way to sex your plants early.

no. Anything before preflowers or flowers show is just a guess.

only at the later stages is this true
the males tend to be a bit lankier and taller, standing above the females and raining pollen down onto them. i remember a picture of a hemp field where they had removed all but one male per 400 square-feet or so and you could easily pick them out. i will try to find it. it's actually pretty cool.

i couldn't find the one i remember but i did find this shot, you can see the males on the right
i read somewhere males tend to be 10-15% taller, but again this will only be apparent well after you could have already determined sex by flowers
