have a spot
    #207439 - 03/21/09 02:39 PM (15 years, 10 days ago)

so i have an outdoor spot, i dug a hole and the dimensions of this spot are 7' x 5' x 1'

i figure planting one plant every square foot will give each plant a cubic foot (6.4 gallons) of growing space atleast...  so i should have about 4-6' tall plants givin they are kinda close together...

what do you guys think i should do for soil?  im going to need cheap soil, if i use quality soil on the bottom layer all the way through it will cost me $200!!  what do you guys think i should do?

i think if ur gonna gorilla u need more then a foot of space between. they'll compete for light and some will over grow the others. have u ever seen a 6 foot plant? u could play ring-around-rosey round one a that big, in my experience anyways.put at least a few feet between. stick ya some timed release round it for fertilizer, u gonna be able to nurture ur babies often or ya gonna plant and check ever so often?

im planning on half of them being cut out anyway as they will be males, plus im factoring in storm/animal damage that could drop the final amount of plants....  35 babies will end up being 15 women at harvest... and yes i'll be nurturing them the whole time...  i dont want huge plants, most of the native plants are 4-6 so I'm trying to keep these plants lower than that...  4 feet plants would be perfect...

and my question was how i should layer my soil? mulch at bottom and potting soil top?  and mabye something in between?

What are the conditions where you live? Do you have a lot of rain? Is there an expected drought this year? Get a farmers almanac, let us now the environmental factors, and we can give you solid advice.

I would go with a 30% topsoil, 30% compost/humus premix, 20% peat and 20% perlite. You could just opt for Miracle Grow organic soil and add 3-4 handfuls of perlite to each bag. You are probably going to have to make a few trips to water the plants, until the rainy season starts.

If you think that bunching the plants is going to keep them from getting over 6' tall, thats false. Space them better as previously suggested. You'll have to tie them down or pinch the tops to keep them shorter.

im not gonna mix 35 cubic feet of soil that will take forever... plus id have to load my truck full of it and drive straight to my spot to dump it, if thats not obvious i dont know what is...

how bout 40% mulch on the bottom layer and the top 60% miracle grow potting mix?

i live in a dry climate as well so i dont need to add perlite or anything for aeration...

This is a very bad choice of dirt. MJ doesn't do well in miracle grow, Black gold is a better choice and cheaper as well.

The biggest problem with standard MG soil is that it has time released fert in it. I don't want it if I can't control the nutes.

I guess you could, if your budget allows.

Yeah, I have heard that it's a good idea to mix your dirt you're purchasing with native dirt. I'm not sure the reasoning for this, but I have read it many places before. Perhaps someone here could enlighten us further..

I think that is mostly hearsay, but it is said that it keeps the roots from being confused. And I mean hearsay with MJ. This is something I have seen on HGTV with some landscaping plants and trees.

With native dirt, you are going to have weeds in no time. Maybe you can compromise with a 50/50 good premix (MJ suitable) and a mix recipe similar to the one I gave. The one I gave is pretty simplistic. You can add all kinds of great stuff, but for the budget grower .
