Growing in a shady spot????
    #400146 -

will marijuana still grow okay if is shady and dosent get much direct sunlight because of trees taking the light? maybe like 2 - 4 hours direct sunlight a day?

it will grow - it's called weed for a reason - but don't expect anything spectacular.  Those are far from optimal conditions.

It is not a weed.

Depending on your environment it might be best.  In my area direct sunlight means over 100 degrees F during the growing season.  Also, a shady spot can still have much more light intensity than your average indoor grow, so yes as far as light goes it will be fine.

Yes, it absolutely is.

Will it grow "ok" ? Yes.

When it flowers is when you are going to be dissapointed

I've grown in shady/shaded areas before and the yield/results were pathetic compared to the plants that got good sunlight for the better part of the day.

Dude, if you're insistent on growing in the shade, go for it. I already told you my experience with shaded areas. Me telling you what the yield was isn't going to tell you anything. If you were my neighbor and grew the exact same strain and gave the same nutrients it would be rellevant.

What?!

Cannabis is usually considered a flowering herb, especially by those who cultivate it.  A weed is commonly known as a plant that is unwanted and grows amongst cultivated plants.  Not like me to argue semantics though.

I could see it being classified as either. Unwanted by some, wanted by many, definitely aggressive growth patterns, but also could be called a flowering herb because of aromatic and culinary benefits.

you're right, pretty much pointless semantic argument because either definition is fine in my book :hi5:

I've grown a plant in the shade before, don't expect to get much bud off of it. Ideally outdoors you want 8 hours of direct sunlight, don't settle for a maximum of 4.

Grow some in full sun, grow some in shade. I guarantee you'll never grow in shade again!

I didn't realize I'd kick up such an interesting discussion with my quasi-flippant comment.  Seriously, though, cannabis HEMP is probably a lot more "weed-like" than sativa or indica.  I've heard it called a weed before because it grows so easily and almost anywhere - toss a handful of seeds somewhere there's dirt and you'll get plants.  But I'm pretty sure that was cannabis hemp that people were talking about, not sativa or indica (or sativa x indica).

Have I clarified or muddied the discussion?  Oh, and  sorry if I've hijacked the post

hmm what if one were to somehow introduce hemp genes into sativa/indica genes to get faster growth? it would probibly decrese potency too though..sorry just a stoner thought

neat idea though.  Cannabis Hemp has been bred (so far as I understand it) to produce as much fibrous, pulpy material as possible, to be used in making all sorts of things - from clothes to sails to paper.  Cannabis hemp has NOT been selected for THC content.  I'm not sure what a hemp cross with sativa or indica would look like - though I'm curious.  I imagine it wouldn't be worth it - or a good idea in the first place.  But, as I said, I don't know.  Thoughts?

It would set back cannabis breeding a few hundred years.

According to wikipedia, hemp is a variety of cannabis sativa.  Weird!  I wonder at what point in time the sativa we know and love today znd the hemp-sativa diverged?

Tecnically all cannabis is classified under "C. Sativa". Or at least it used to be.

Estimates place this at 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, when humans began breeding cannabis for desirable traits, for both medicine and fiber.

well if you cross breed hemp and another strain it would decrease the potency ALOT.

Ya think so? :durrhurr:

What if it was another variety of hemp? Then it relatively wouldn't decrease the potency ALOT.

don't sativas get really tall really fast anyway? seems to me the sativa that we all grow is just a more potent version of the hemp variety...

Indica on the other hand...hmmmm

I think hemp cult is quicker because farmers dont allow hemp to flower and therefore can cut it at veg anytime they want. The flowering loosens the hemp's fibers

My outdoor last year was in a woods with a 60% thick canopy. Some light did get to them during the earlier hours, but it didn't get decent light until prolly about 2:00...and after that, the sun went behind at building at like 5.

It stayed short, but got pretty bushy.

The others I did were in better spots.

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?
