Biosphere 2, the world's largest greenhouse (PICTURES)

this place is a research facility that re-created the Earth inside a dome. Originally the mission was for 8 people to live inside for 2 years without leaving and they would grow their own food, ect ect

that's one of the main reason they failed. They couldnt get enough calories to keep living in a reasonable manner.

Yep, Bio-dome. The dome set vacant for a period of 4 years after the 2 owners got into an agrument over the direction Biosphere was taking. That is when the movie was made, part of the profit going to re-open Biosphere 2 which was ran by Columbia University for quite awhile until it was handed over to University of Arizona a couple years ago

What is even more amazing that the plants and all the life housed in there, is the mechanics that are underneath it and help keep each environment at its respective climate. We literally walked from the desert where it was 95 degrees and dry. To the rainforest where it was 70.

18$, but 1/2 of that goes directly to research and is tax-deductible as a research donation.

nope. I went in and looked around for about 45 minutes before the tour started and stayed for another 30 minutes after the tour ended. Was probably there for about 3 hours

I remember being to one a long time ago it was pretty cool felt real nice lots of tropical birds flying around.  Some of the brightest colors on an animal I have ever seen.

They used to have a bunch of tropical birds in this one until they stopped the bulk of their research. Now everything they do are specialized research projects. They used to have a bunch of awesome looking snakes as well. Nature is awesome :yesnod:

Get myself out of debt. I have about 2,500 in debt that I am working on clearing out. Definitely pick of some kush and other goodies too. But bulk of it is going to debt.

all controlled by machines. The guy said they only have about 25 staff members, 10 of which are in charge of maintenance and repairing equipment.

having oxygen would probably help to. In case you missed it, that was the major flaw. They made it about 6 months and the oxygen level had dropped to about 15%, the equivalent of being on top of mount Everest.

They had 2 huge gardens to grow their own food. The "lake" was an ocean, its all salt water. No internet and no beer :tongue:

They grew enough coffee beans to have 1 cup of coffee every 2 weeks, per person :crazy2:

they do now, but it is no longer an active experiment. it's just a research facility

probably because plants also give off a lot of CO2. But I dont know the exact reason, I just know that after 6 months they ran out of oxygen

From everything I read and from what I remember, CO2 is absorbed by plants during the day, and oxygen is released. Then at night excess CO2 is released

but im only about 70% sure

I googled "do plants produce CO2," every site I checked said they do. :shrug:

I dont see any other way they would have ran out of oxygen

only CAm and C3 plant those plants store during the day and release at night because lack of water
