That's actually not why it fails. The proof fails because the square root function is discontinuous over the complex plane, allowing for branches

after further contemplation i conclude that you dont. that property results from the fact that when you square a fraction you square the numerator and denominator.

The trick here is that  . In the array of equations I lose the minus sign by disrespecting this rule and end up with 1 = -1.
A shorter, more obvious method would be
