first post (UPDATED)
    #143962 - 11/12/08 12:05 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

So as many of you know i've been around the shroomery for a few years, and have aquired quite the technical mycology skill. With MJ however, i've never gotten into indoor growing. i've always threw a few seeds out and let em do their thing out in nature. I've always grown houseplants and a huge garden every year but never got technical about it just grew nice plants nothing spectacular. I've always been too paranoid to do an indoor MJ grow, but i decided to give it a try anyways this season after a change of heart and a good dose of acid.

so of course, even though i knew this resource was here i decided to to go for it with just a cheap book (buds for less by seemorebuds)obviously it's had a roadblock or two and i've come to my homepage's sister site for your help.

so to start here's my parameters of the grow:

1. Are you growing from seed or clones? seed started in rockwool cube

2. How old are your plants? 28 days

3. How tall are your plants? 8 inches - 15 inches (plants will all be raised or tied down to be same height today, something i've been neglecting for a week or so)

4. What size containers are they planted in? 5 gallon

5. What is your soil mix? ocean forest by fox farm

6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use? every couple days, tap water

7. What is the pH of your water? i know i should pay more attention I'll start adjusting it...

8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio? no additional ferts

9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything? none

10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights")CFL's 8 - 23 watt and 4 - 42 watt (just bought 8 more 42 watt to replace the 23 watt bulbs then was gonna move the 23 watt bulbs to the sides for supplemental light)

11. How close are your lights to the plants? 2.5 - 3 inches

12. What size is your grow space in square feet? the plants take up only the space that their pots require however the growspace is 4 x 4 x 7

13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space? i will stick a hygrometer in there today.... temp is 75-79 depending on time of day (temp sensor is between all 4 plants at height of the tops...)

14. What is the pH of the soil? about 6.8

15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space? when the seeds were first cracking there was a small fungus gnat (from my oyster mushroom greenhouse) i released lady bugs in hopes that they'd eat them, seems effective i haven't seen anything other than the ladybugs in 3 weeks and i've been checking the leaves (tops and bottoms), watching for activity on the soil surface, as well as checking my other houseplants and projects for problems...

16. How much experience do you have growing? grass... virtually none other than throwing some seedlings or seeds out in the woods and coming back a few times in the year getting minimal yeild... growing just about everything else (herbs, poppies, tomatoes, salvia, vegetables, bonsai, houseplants, flowers, fruit trees, etc.) 5+ years of experience. pretty new to paying serious attention to Ph levels..

that being said i have some sick plants... i shouldn't have been so confident in my abilities, but if i get a spot on a tomato leave i don't worry about it, with my grass it must be primo and i should've thought of that before just going for it..

I'm 10 days into 12/12 (after 18 days veg)... the light's are close to the plants (2.5 - 3 inches) i just moved them to take the pic... and the changes i listed to lights will be made today or tomorrow as well as the plants being raised or tied down as i stated.. clones have been taken for future use and seem to be thriving after 6 days...

the growroom is built out of wood 4x4x7 and covered with black/white plastic (white side in). i have two oscilating fans and fairly decent air exchange from the outside of the growroom in my opinion.

I plan on going HPS for my next one, but i went cheap here and am not expecting a great yield, although i certainly wouldn't complain. What i do want is QUALITY bud and i will do whatever. so please help me if you can..

pic:

so here's my questions for the growers here(without having utilized the all powerful search function yet):

What's wrong with my plants in your experienced opinion?
What can i do to prevent this from worsening?
What should i do to get my plants back on track?
What changes would you make to my setup?
With a budget of 400 dollars (give or take a bit) what would you do to improve quality and yeild?

well that's about it.
now off to search function land for my own research...

thanks guys!

Looks like nute burn or light burn to me. When they get that crispy from the tips look like that.

This problem maybe light if the humidty is to low then the lights may burn or dry the leaves.

Hey bro!  Good to see you posting over here!  Welcome to the growery.  I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you as I am basically in your position - seasoned with fungi and learning the intricacies of the cannabis plant's growth cycle.  Good luck!

The curled leaf margins mean heat stress, under watering, or nutrient build-up. I couldn't find whether you were using ferts or not so i can only speculate.
What sort of ventilation do you use? Have any leaves touched the cfls? They don't feel hot but they can burn leaves over time. Try aiming a small fan at your plants, this will serve two purposes; increase stem strength, and hopefully get rid of some heat around the plants.
I wish I'd seen this thread sooner. Keep us updated on your progress. Good luck!

nutrient lock-up happens w' ph issues., but the curling looks like heat stress, when they fringe up generally the plant is trying to disperse more water than it is able to, curling down tends to be excessive nutes.

air temp + lights = my bet

"but if i get a spot on a tomato leave i don't worry about it"

Try and think a little more in that direction with weed. I don't grow but I have acquired a good base of knowledge over the last few years on the subject and over attention to the plants wants and needs is a real killer of pot.

But to your situation.
I would guess that your RH is excessively low. I don't know your location but where I'm at it's winter and the RH out side is low as hell and the RH indoors is even lower. If I was still growing mushrooms I could cracker dry them with just a fan indoors over a 24 - 48 hours as long as I wasn't running my humidifier.

I have in the past seen a few pot plants growing with the CFL's touching the bulbs off and on but not constantly because the airflow was so high none of the leaves were standing still. You have to check on your plants every few hours during the light cycle if you're placing CFL's this close to the plants though.

But yea, my guess is it has something to do with RH being to low and Heat Burn.

I will message you some good reading material

well being my first ever go at indoor MJ, i'm happy with my results so far. it could look a lot better, but the smell of the grow alone has been more than enough to make me happy. It's still got a couple weeks, but i had to move it to a friends house. city inspector needs to go through the house, but i don't know when...  it seemed to survive the move just fine, especially for moving 15 miles in winter. I miss them though.

my friend was kind enough to let me use his spare room to set a tent up to finish out the grow, but now i have to travel 15 miles to see my babies...

this is them yesterday...

i figure i'll be breaking in the new year with this
