Late Poppies
    #597195 - 11/16/11 04:06 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Received some poppy seeds from a mate late this season
Germinated them in a pot then transplanted them to a garden bed
Have been feeding them heaps of organic liquid fertiliser to try and get them big enough before it's to hot
Its been a late and wet spring here which has been good for them

They have raced to flower as the weather is getting warmer
There are lots of flower heads and I'm very happy with them

Their in the same bed as some radishes and basil

I have noticed since they have begun going to flower that there seem to be two varieties,
a grey leaf and green/grey leaf, they grey leaf are going to flower first. I consulted the bloke who gave me the seeds, he says that he gave 2 types, Purple and white

Not long now till I find out for sure :tee:

They grow so quickly:bliss:
I'm loving them with lots of water and food

More flowers are opening everyday

There's another type thats growing amongst the pinks
They have larger flower heads and should be open in a day or 2
Some have 3 and 4 flower heads per plant:smile:

I thought they hated being transplanted?

What soil did you use and how did you sow them? Did you just sprinkle them on top of the soil or did you poke them into the soil a bit?

Sowed the seeds in a large pot
when they were about 2-3 cm I transplanted them into the garden bed
divided a few and left the rest in clumps of 3 and 4 seedlings
dug in some compost and a few bags of potting mix before transplanting
-regular applications of organic liquid fertiliser has done them good

The transplanting did slow their growth for a few weeks

Ideally sowing the seed strait to the garden bed would be preferable

Beautiful man

I just planted about 30 seeds into 3 big 3 gallon pots. Its cold here but perfect temperature for them in a window, I was thinkin about keepin a log for people to appreciate them if they turn out.
Lots off people are interested in poppies just not enough people grow them so hopefully I can get some good indoor teks going to start helpin other people out and get a good community going for some indoor growing.
I got about 800 seeds to plant in the spring in my back yard .
Keep up the good work :mushroom2:

(sorry im stoned)

Very nice work Olive!!!

I planted some poppies myself. Unfortunately, they were neglected as I got sucked into the cannabis growing hobby, lol.

Seeing your post I walked out to check on my ones, I'm so embarrassed, lol. 98% of them died before the cabbage stage.
3 of them did survive, but are so tiny, petals have just opened.

They are so small they are cute, lol

Any potential of extracting opium from these little guys?

Here's some pics

I struggled with opiate addiction for a long time, I guess it is a blessing in disguise. God's probably telling me I'm not strong enough to touch it again and keep away. I'm not ready to sit on a big stash and not get hooked.
I was worried about having heaps of opium, getting hooked again and running out, lol

On another note, they are such beautiful flowers.

Should I save the seeds from these little guys?
Reckon I could vape the pods? I heard it is the best way to smoke. Looking at it, I wouldn't even have enough to get high, lol

Maybe I'll try again next year
I plan to build a raised garden bed if I do, then fence it off to keep the dog out. What kind of fertilizer did you use?

Cheers
DrMagickz

Lols I don't know how big a penny is but I am sure these are much smaller. Here's a pic to show size:

Olive, how big are your bulbs?

I fed my poppies on organic liquid fertiliser and dug some nice rich compost into the soil before transplanting the seedlings:biggrin:

Most of the 'bulbs' are 3-5 cm across
Heavelly resined, and have all but finished flowering

I am aquiring some gigantium seeds for next season:aweyeah:

Nice grows you guys...  Maybe ill post some pics of my lil babies...
I got 3, 3 gallons with about 10 seeds each in them.
In the larger diameter pot we have about 7 seedlings about an inch long!! very exciting.
The smaller pot had 3 seedlings but my kitten decided to sleep in the pot overnight and woke up noticing one of her paws hanging over the edge... Only one seedling remains.. haha.  But more of the seeds could still pop.

Last pop still has nothing but Im not worried if none pop in the next week and a half Ill just throw in some more seeds (I have PLENTYY)

Ill have to get in on this an post pics as I go as well xD
