This were premiun in late 80s early 90s, prior to glass. Most people had those screw together bowls, if you had the protopipe you were balling.
Then glass became a thing.

I should say it was a decent pipe, especially for hash. Takes some up keep to keep the tube clean and it was common to lose the purpose built poker which made it very hard to keep clean.
Would probably be really good for hash or something like moon rocks

I had a pipe like this. When I would get a bag I would put the best bud in the chamber between the mouthpiece and the elbow. By the time the bag was smoked the chamber bud would be resinous and really kick your ass, usually smoked right in the chamber.

Thats a really cool method, putting the weed in the chamber! Need to remember that! I think I only smoked outta metal pipe like the one pictured a few times there at the start, was a buddy's of mine. Then we moved to glass like everyone else. I don't ever see the metal ones hardly anymore. I always heard about folks making them out of hardware store parts, but glass and papers was easy enough to get at all the gas stations around here
I'm gonna upload a pic of one I found in my Uncles belongings, that I look forward to using too. Still got a bunch of resin in it!

Back in the day hardware stores would have a section of brass lamp parts for chandeleirs and diy lamps. Those parts often were readily adopted to make pipes like the one your uncle had. Those not in the know would make stuff from the plumbing aisle which was potentially toxic. Another potential option was usinf a socket like a chillum 
There were many states were you couldn't even buy paraphanalia.

Hardware store pipes were the norm at one point. Just remember to take it apart before you by it.
