Not too long, I figure it should be the same timeline as the effects of chewing betel, but slowed down a little since I swallowed the material without chewing too thoroughly... probably about 45-60 minutes of peak effects, and about the same length come-down. These little snacks could come in handy as a quick pick-me-up.

Betel is a stimulant nut that's chewed throughout much of southeast asia. It's used regularly by 10% of the world's population. It just never caught on in America, and now it's been made illegal to sell for human consumption, in keeping with this country's fine tradition of discriminating against minorities via their drugs of choice. It's nice by itself, but the tasty pre-made forms of it are no longer available, just the sliced nut. And the sliced nuts aren't as pleasant to chew without a fresh betel leaf to wrap it in (which naturally aren't available easily either), and I read about someone making it into chocolate chip cookies. I found a recipe for anise almond biscotti and figured I'd try making it, switching out almonds for betel nuts.
The anise, nutmeg, and clove are all just traditional aromatic spices that are added to betel chews... they may or may not potentiate the effects; at the least, they taste good.
Myrrh is a resin commonly used in incense. It also has analgesic effects, and historically was commonly used to treat pain prior to the popularization of opium. I didn't use enough for it to be fully psychoactive, but myrrh is known to potentiate some drugs, so I figured it was worth throwing in (not so much worth the aftertaste)
Lemongrass is an herb that had mildly uplifting/stimulant properties.. not really what I'd call psychoactive, but I thought it might blend well with the other ingredients.
And I can definitely say, two pieces of that biscotti is quite pleasant indeed.

i never doscovered until tonight how good white country gravy mixes well with a lot of different food
