question on hydro growing
    #742763 - 08/03/14 10:24 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

hey all about to start testing out a hydro grow with deep water culture method. Now im germinating my seeds in wet paper towels like i always do and i will put the sprouted seed in a rock wool cub before i put it in the bucket ... but there is one thing im wondering... with plants not really having any roots.. how deep should i put the water in the bucket cause i dont want to drown the plants in the rock wool cubes... so what is the best way about starting a new plant with out drowning it?

I'm no expert, but you probably won't need to DWC for the first few days/weeks until the plant gets big enough to need that type of watering system. I would just water by hand until roots start to show up on the bottom.

Well when I did dwc, I would germinate the seeds or wait for the clones to show roots.  Once they have roots our of the cube then they can go in your dwc, having the water level up to root level.  I would usually start ppm at 70-100.  Just need to make sure you air pump is putting out enough air bubbles to reach them.  Otherwise, you can hand water them u n til the roots reach down .

5.8 that's the standard for all hydro operations.  Also you have to check your PPM, as well as water temperature it self.

just another quick question.... i poped the seeds in a wet paper towel.. then i put them in rockwool cubs. when the root came out of the rockwool about a 1/4th inch i put them in the hydro buckets. that was two days ago.. now about how long will it take before i see roots come out of the bottom into the buckets?

Depends on the strain, and how big your baskets are dude.  Just keep the water level up and make sure that they have enough air being pumped up to them.

well the strains are auto flowers. i know i have plenty of air .. im using a two pumps. each pump pushes 110L of air a min. Each pump is hooked up to 6 buckets.

i just mesured the basket. it is 5 inches deep. im using lowes 5 gallon dark blue paint buckets. I have 3.5 gallons of water in each bucket. the water line is just under the basket.  did not know if i should have had the water light all the way up the basket with the rock wool cubes and cause the plant to get moldy or drawn with the seedling being so young being freshly poped

Well if it's not wet at the bottom of the cube, then you need to raise the level.  That's what I would check.  Or at least damp ya know.

Except that's not what happens. Autoflowers are a ruderalis crossed with another strain, not just a ruderalis.
