Your favorite book of all time?
    #740939 - 07/22/14 01:13 PM (9 years, 8 months ago)

Ok so I was going to ask this in the wbaycr thread but felt this question deserves it's own thread.

Mine is 'On The Road' by Jack Kerouac, it's the only book I've ever read twice (hate reading books more than once normally as there's so many on my list that need to be read) and will most likely re-read again. The extended version is the best, an 'uncensored version' if you like. There's so much going on in a trip across America, and written so frantically on one scroll of paper! There was a rumour he wrote it on a speed binge but was actually on many black coffees.
Shame he had to turn into a belligerent drunk, he was at his prime in his earlier years.

So what's the book currently at the #1 spot for you? Think about it, it's not easy!

I havent read a book from cover to cover in years, just dont have the free time. But off the top of my head, Marilyn Manson's Autobiography was a good read. Even if you dont like him or his music its a great book.

Even though I'm slightly embarrassed by this...Where the Red Fern Grows is one of my favorite books of all time. I read it in 5th grade and it tore me up at the end

That and this one sci-fi book in my old highschool's library called Earthseed. I loved that book and have never seen it or been able to find it ever since.

Flowers for Algernon and anything by Isaac Asimov are my favorite short stories by far.

I guess I'm just simple like that. :pipesmoke:

I've been keeping my eyes out lately for more Asimov books. I'd really like to find a copy of Robot Dreams, but i can settle for the Foundation series to start out with.

As for favorite book, there's a tie between three that i've read 3-4 times:
House of Leaves - Mark Z. Danielewski
American Psycho - Brett Easton Ellis
One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Ken Kesey

Reading the Odyssey my freshman year was one of the greatest adventure my teenage brain enjoyed, Traitor General by Dan Abnett was a great book in the Gaunts Ghosts series.

A dozen elite covert tracking specialist dropped on a planet for over a year to track down and kill a Disgraced Imperial General who is being interrogated by the agents of chaos.

It was amazing because it was an amazing book right at the beginning of a story arc.

I can't think of another book that has had a bigger impact on me.
I need to give it another go soon... highly recommended.

I'm pretty simple with my books.
Old school too I guess.
I love The Outsiders growing up. I still break it out every now and then.

When I was a teenager I read a book that embarrassed the shit out of me. You know how you get so involved in a story that it doesn't matter where you are, you'll just bust it out and start reading?

I did that with a book called "Smack", I think it was by a guy named Melvin burgess. It was like a Heroin addict love story. It was really good, but sad. One chapter in particular got me eyes to watering right in the middle of geography class. I started to cry and could tell I couldn't keep it together.lol. I just stood up and left the room.

Teacher got pissed that I left, but I told him after class what happened and he just laughed about it. Said at least I was reading and not on a cell phone or writing notes or some shit.lol

In general I love most of the Lovecraft books. I love the mythos. Its enthrawling and intriguing to see how unimportant humans are in the big scheme of things. General Madness in the Lovecraft books is a madness that I have yet to see captured in any movie.

Shits just a trip.

:highfive: I have a huge compilation of Lovecraft stories that I'm slowly making my way through...they are amazing.

For a long time Timothy Leary's autobiography "Flashbacks" and the Hobbit/LotR series topped my list.  Read all those at least 5 times.  Not so sure anymore.  I've read a lot of classics and pop novels that have been terrific.

For certain, my single favorite written story is At The Mountains of Madness by HP Lovecraft, although its not a book really.  I have seen it published by itself and it was referred to as a novella.
