what you guys think? Plan on putting fish and snails in it. Guess it could easily be a hydroponics

finally, someone replied lol. I have since used clay hydro pellets (i found at the pet store), clear tubing instead of latex and a submersible lee's air pump aquarium filter.  Fiesta has some larger, clearer jugs used for water that i think may work better and hold more water.  Im slowly building up my supplies. Think imma do one hydroponics and one aquaponics to see how they compare. The aquaponics is gonna have a bunch of snails and maybe goldfish in it. Im just waiting till the time is right. Dont wanna rush it before im ready you know.

Very cool and such simple construction. Post up pics with some plants in there! I cant wait to see the results of this. Makes me want to start some DIY projects again for my outside vegetable garden.

This thread was moved from Hydroponic & Agroponics.

Reason:
I'm gonna move this to the main cultivation forum so more people can see it. Most people never venture into these side forums and I like this idea.

If you can find any of his info a guy named or called actually Breeder Steve the owner of Spice of Life Seeds is an expert in this field. He has since left the business but some of his info may be out-there. He was the original breeder of the strain Sweet Tooth, Shiskaberry, and has done quite a bit of work with DJ Short breeder of the Blueberry strain.

When it came to picking plants to use as parent plants there was and has been nobody better. He's been out of the business for 4 or 5 years now so places selling Spice of Life seeds are selling some pretty old stock. He is growing grapes now. He has a vineyard and specilizes in helping to grow grapes for wine. He went were the money is.

slight change of plans, same concept. Ended up getting that jug from fiesta, a 6 inch, netted pot and a Lees triple flow air driven aquarium filter. I figure the filter will double to clean the water as well as keeping it aerated. My next step is to get a bunch of snails and start the process of cycling the water..  Ps. the water is rainwater, just like my aquariums. I use rainwater on all my projects.

Bad idea to use a clear container for DWC

You will damage the roots and have a algae farm at the same time. Same reason I tell people don't use clear hose in their hydro set ups.

Use the clear container and you're setting your self up to fail or for a pain in the ass grow.

Just to kind of add on to this....you would also run into problems with your water temperature. Especially if its under HID lighting.

wait so its drip and also bubbles splashing the roots? I don't know a whole lot about hydroponic systems, just curious.

Something you may want to think about. Having a tank off to the the side with the snails, fish and whatever life you want to put in it and circulate the water threw the pots. That way the snails and fish can get light without fucking up the roots which light is gonna do. Leave em in the dark and you fuck with the snails and or fish you put in it. With a tank off to the side you can clean and take care of the water life without fucking with the plant. Remember that the root growth in DWC is fast and if you use something under 5 gallons it will be full of roots. Not  a whole lot of room for life to move around in.

yeah most aquaponic set ups have the fish in a seperate tank than the plants. Some systems even have an extra reservoir called a sump that they can use to further filter the water.

i also agree that a clear container is a bad idea for algae and temp reasons.

so a seperate tank for fish and switch to somethigng black or dark

well, i quickly threw this together.. Not gonna be my final set up, but a step closer anyways..  Two of the same pumps pumping water back and forth between the tank and jug. Of course im gonna switch to a dark 5 gallon bucket. Think im getting closer towards pulling this off

Getting better but its better to have it drain back into the fish tank...not use 2 pumps.

if you use 2 pumps and theyre not EXACTLY the same pressure then one tank will slowly drain completely while the other slowly overflow

even with 2 identical pumps differences in hose length, size, height, etc will affect the actual flow of water.

i had this happen years ago on one of my first hydro set ups...was such a pain to see the bucket empty after leaving it running overnight. Had to switch to one pump.

These guys make the best dwc systems. You can look over their stuff and modify it to your needs.

Is it a drip system AND aeroponics? Also what happens when you want to feed the plants? Just curious

Its aquaponics not aero

the fish poop out waste that is used by the plants as nutrients so the plants are constantly fed.

in more complex set ups the user can harvest food or herb as well as edible fish such as tilapia.
