Fan leaves growing above plant tip
    #728054 - 04/27/14 08:41 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

I noticed that with my veg lights(just a few CFL), my largest set of fan leaves from the top are sometimes growing upward above the growing tip, especially with topped/FIM plants. I've been bending the high growing fan leaves down below the top, but I was wondering if that's actually more beneficial for the yield?

I feel like if I don't bend the fan leaves down on my FIM/topped stuff, they will grow needlessly large and become the assumed top of the plant. I guess the plants dna keeps the fan leaves from growing past a certain size I just don't know if I should be bothering pulling the high growing leaves down.

after I feed or water my plants they always do that, thats how a plant is supposed to look if its healthy.  drooping leaves or branches means lack of something.  your plant is happy when it reaching (not stretching or drooping) upwards.

Lol I know what your talking about it happens to a lot of my topped plants/or ones I Lsted.  If the leafs are  still alive I always leave them. Your plants are fine.    My two cents.:stayfunky:

Like the fan leaves are growing straight up above the rest of the plant. I bend them down to a horizontal position but maybe 24 hours later they are aiming straight up rather than out to the side. I should really tie them down.

I'm mainly wondering if the plant can assume the fan leaves are the top of the plant and suppress the part of the plant that grows out and flowers. Wtf do people call the stems that flower/bud?

2 plants here. The foreground(the green looking one) plant is normal and the backround(looks white from light reflection) plants top fan leaves are starting to go upward. The backrounds top fan leaves will eventually be going almost completely vertical, and that's my concern.

btw if anyone cares the front is sage and sour and back sinmint cookies.

Your leaves pointing up towards the light is a great thing, it means the plant is happy and healthy. There's no reason to bend them down, it knows where it's apex is.

So the fan leaves can't be confused as the top of the plant? or even slow down or prevent potential growth of what should be the top of the plant? I was under the impression that the intended top of the plant would take a lot longer to grow or even not grow as much if the fan leaves were above it.

This pic is the result of constantly pulling the largest top fan leaves below the tip on a FIM attempt(might have screwed up). Also had been pulling down those smaller fan leaves, but both just go back to standing straight up.

damn auxin

The apical meristem of a plant is not signaled by the height above the ground, but rather by the actual growth point of the plant. Fan leaves are differentiated cells and will not be mistaken as a meristem by the plant. Leaves pointing up usually indicates a very healthy plant, but can also be a precursory signal for magnesium deficiency.

Cool thanks. that's pretty much exactly the answer I was hoping for. They def aren't deficient of magnesium. They get molasses and cal mag.

Oddly they haven't grown straight up since the OP, but had for maybe 2 weeks prior.

Don't be so sure. Calcium and magnesium are both 2+ cations and so they compete with each other for exchange points within the growing media. Too much calcium can completely prevent your plants from getting magnesium.

Yea I guess PH can also effect certain uptake. well I'm not too worried. It was just bothering me not knowing if the fan leaves being so high up would slow growth of the apical meristem or the axillary/lateral buds. Thanks again.
