What's the best "more affordable" alternative to FFOF?
    #698808 - 12/13/13 09:45 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Ive gone through two bags of FFOF so far, and need more. Its working great but Im tired of paying $25-30 for a bag of soil. Are there any other brands that are under $15 but still pretty good? A buddy uses miracle grow soil but Ive read a lot of bad things about it.

If you are doing things right, your yields should be WAY more than covering the costs of the soil.

How much light are you running, and what kind of yields are you getting?

If your looking to cut costs try going with pure coco and feed hydroponicly. Reuse the coco 5 times, should last quite awhile. Otherwise just got to find a good basic airry soil mix to start, feel them at the store if you can, some places will have an opened one that you can stick your hands in. Build it up yourself if you want, or just plan on using more nutrients if its not complete.

I just started recently, only harvested two plants so far and yields were pretty small because I was using cfl's. I just got my MH/HPS set yesterday and hung it last night though!

I do have a shitload of coir for my mushroom hobby. Could I just replace the soil completely with it and maybe a little perlite? It seems like the cost of the extra nutes I'd need would offset the savings anyway wouldn't it? Plus I'd have to buy a ph meter or test strips, haven't had a need for any with FFOF.

Just wanted to update for anyone that may be interested...there's no Kellogg Patio Plus at any Lowes or Home Depots near me, but I got two 1.5 cu ft bags from here for $25 shipped, which is the same price FFOF is for one bag shipped from the cheapest place I could find online. I'm in the midwest.

you need to treat coco if it comes in brick form. Nutes won't be too expensive. I've got my nutrients down to under $5 per ounce.

Do you all not have gardening nurseries where you all are at?  Damn.  At Ace hardware they have have 4kg worth of compressed coir in 1kg tiles called BeatsPeat for like 10 dollars.  At my local garden nursery they have premium bags of top-soil for 8.99 called Bacto Earth.  At the same nursery I can get 4 foot cubic bags of perlite, vermiculite and Sphagnum peat moss all for under 20$ a bag.  I don't be fuckin' with no hydrostore for any of my soil-less growing medium needs.  I just go to my nursery and get the stuff, bring it home and mix it myself for like a quarter of the cost of buying FFOF or any other brand of hydrostore specific brand of growing medium.  Just don't forget your cal-mag if you are going to grow in coco coir.

I can get good top soil and perlite nearby, but not all the other goodies ffof has in it. I already have a ton of vermiculite and coir at home but I'm having excellent luck with soil right now and its basically maintenance free besides watering for at least the first month.
