Help With Soil Mixture/Getting Ready For Next Year!
    #687243 - 10/02/13 03:42 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, so I'm about 2 weeks away from harvesting my first 'real' outdoor grow (or indoor for that matter). Things went good, but it could've been better. I just wanted to run my list of soil and nutrients for next year's grow by you guys.

Harvest Organic potting soil (look it up, it's straight out B.C. for pot)
Sphagnum peat moss
Perlite
Blood & Bone Meal
Dolomitic Lime
Worm Castings (a shitload of 'em)

So, do you guys think that'll be a good soil mix? It's close to what I used this year, but I fucked up and left out the Dolomitic Lime, so I ended up with a calcium deficiency like a BITCH. Think that'll cover all of my micro and macro nutrients?

Need a little help getting the proportions of each part correct (how much bone meal, perlite, etc.). So if you guys could chime in on that, it would be a great help.

Alright, here's what I thought about doing for nutes:

Fish Emulsion (5-1-1) every other watering during veg
Neptune's Harvest (2-4-1) every other watering during flowering
Epsom Salts (one Tbsp per gal of water, twice during entire life cycle)
Blackstrap Molasses (one tsp per gallon, once a month)

Think that sounds like a good lineup of 'watered-in' ammendments?

Ya know it's been years since I used blood and bone meal so I can't really answer this question.

So....here's the list of ingredients for my soil mix:

Harvest Organic potting soil (look it up, it's straight out B.C. for pot)
Sphagnum peat moss
Perlite
Blood & Bone Meal
Dolomitic Lime

Now......how much of what? Could someone help me figure out the proportions?

Don't forget to "cook" to the soil(compost for a month or so)! I don't know a lot of recipes, but I can give you The Revs TLO master soil mix straight from his book, which may or may not be messed up for me to share in a forum, and may or may not be important you use tlo only with that. I have no idea, but I know you can use this mix as a water only mix and never add any fertilizer or nutrients, but it's meant to be used with his custom teas and spikes, and really I think if you do anything besides follow the advice in his book you'll end up killing off all the bacteria and whatnot. Figured at the very least it would get you looking into alternative mixes.

Base Mix
2 gallons quality organic soil mix (or healthy organic recycled soil mix)
2 gallons thoroughly rinsed coir (coconut fiber)
2 gallons perlite (small nugget size)
2 gallons earthworm castings (fresh earthworm castings, and/or fresh compost works too)
Amendments
1½ cup Grow or Bloom “Pure” by Organicare (or 1 cup 5-5-5)
½ cup greensand
¾ cup ground oyster shells (1 cup if no crushed oyster shells)
REV’S TIP
1 cup crushed oyster shells (optional)
½ cup dolomite lime (powdered)
1¾ cup prilled (pelletized) fast-acting dolomite lime
¼ cup blood meal
¼ cup high N bird/bat guano 12-8-2 N-P-K
½ heaping cup feather meal
1 cup un-steamed granular bone meal (like Whitney Farms brand)
½ cup bulb food
¼ cup powdered soft rock phosphate
½ heaping cup powdered gypsum
½ cup kelp meal
4 heaping cups composted steer manure (this inoculates your mix with specialized microbeasties
and primo organic matter)
½ cup Azomite granular (add an additional ¼ cup greensand if no Azomite)
1 cup granular humic acid ore (such as Down to Earth brand)
1 cup alfalfa meal (or 2 cups pellets—make sure pellets are all organic no additives)
½ cup rock phosphate granular (optional)
1 heaping cup organic rice (important for the good fungi in this soil mix)

Oh btw you can recycle soils and there are recipe for small additions to use recycled soil.
