lighting question

ok I been reading up on lighting and from what I been reading it seems that a couple 400 or 600 watt light would be better then the equivalent in 1000 watt lights.. because that I can keep them closer to the plant and get more lums(per a watt) and light would be more even and less risk of burning the plants with say 5 400 watt lights vs 2 1000 what lights over say 12 plants..

were with the 1000 what light i would have to keep it a lot higher to keep the light more even and with the light being higher them less lums would get to the each plant cause of the break down of light every foot up

would this be correct? this is what i gathered from what i read, i might have miss understood it.
