I feel ya. The more vertical space you have the better.

genetics would play a huge part here too. The autoflowers I grew a few years ago didn't get much larger than a foot. Wasn't my favorite smoke in the world, but it was definitely easy to keep small lol

Yeah, my main strain stretches like a mother fucker. Easily get 3-4 times the size when I initiate.

yup, you saw the plants I took photos of in my current log?
they get around that size give or take 4 inches or so lol I did manage to keep it really short one time, but the yield was so pathetic

coda said: Yah, I mean it could work for sure, but if he's still in the design stage and has room to work with, I would definitely suggest getting some extra height in there. If he can't get the extra space then it might be better to go with CFL lighting than HID, or maybe LED would be the better choice here. I think the HID would be more problematic than beneficial in a space that small.
i was planning to do an lst on the plants to have them grow out sideways with more tops as opposed to being too tall, but if thats too short, i have no problem getting it up to 50-70in, but if its that tall, would it be worth doing an lst? or should i just grow it straight up and utilize all the height space?
so a space of around 48'' x 12'' x 50'' would benefit more from CFL lighting than an HID? for both veg and flowering perhaps?

It is always worth it to train your plants! lst or hst not only allows you to control your plants height, but more importantly increases yield. You will want to create an even canopy that will soak up all the light your lamp puts out. Letting a plant grow naturally indoors just isn't efficient use of a your space.
go with a 4 or 600 watt hid...as long as you can afford to ventilate to keep your temps where they need to be.
