i got a grade 2 ankle sprain about 3 summers ago and it still hurts from time to time.
at least bone breakage heals and generally becomes stronger afterwards. if he tore any ligaments on that landing, though, he's pretty much fucked up for life.

he shattered his ankle on the landing.. they had to do surgery and use pins and screws to hold it in place.
he has a slight limp still, and this was years ago

I had a neighbor, who tried to commit suicide, by going head first onto the cement sidewalk, from his porch roof, that was maybe 10 ft high
