Is this ready to harvest?
    #602442 - 12/22/11 02:13 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

This is my first grow, and I really don't know when to pull the trigger on flushing and curing them.... so here's a pic of the kola of the "ripest" looking one.  Feedback is appreciated.

how far into flower is it?  Whats strain is it?  I would recommend getting a 12.00 microscope 60X-100X magnification from radioshack to look at the trichomes.  See if they are milky amber or still clear.

The calyxes don't look like they have really filled up and swollen out to their maximum potential.

If you cut it now, it'll still be a very fine smoke, but she looks like an extra week or so would really fill her in. Thats going without seeing any trichs.

You'll be amazed how much one week can take a calyx that looks like this: V and turn it into one that looks like this: U (not the best example lol, but the best I could do with my keyboard)

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

I would guess your pretty close. But with the limited info I would guess you are 1-2 weeks out still. It sucks with it starting to look good and isn't ready, but she will definitely be worth the weight.  Haha, I made a funny.  You could always take a tester nug and let it dry for a few days that way you know its still early. At least if your as impatient as me.

With no scope, I would go by the pistils. I in no way say this is 100% accurate because I've always had a scope. But I think I still see some white hairs in there and the red hairs still look good sticking out. What you are looking for with bare eyes are very few if any white ones left with the red ones receding back toward the calyxes. This will be some good strong smoke ime.

Pistils aren't very good indicators at all. Its better to look for the swelling.

My girls are always 100% brown by the time they are finished, and have been that way for a week or more. They say with like 10% white hairs left, but thats always very wrong...at least for how I like my smokes.

Exactly, but once the pistils start shrinking up and receding back, the calyxes should be fully ripe and swollen.  And I did say very few if any white pistils left. I always have a few stragglers in there that remain white until harvested. I also said not 100%, but a good estimation as to how close they are with no scope. Seems like most want to pull early which is a big mistake.  And ive had plenty of girls that look swollen and ready to go that werent.  So I do agree that there are variables to figure out the doneness, but this is first grow...how will he know how much this strain will swell. He will get it down, but with the info given and the lack of "measurement" equipment, I would pay close attention to the pistils. You will definitely know when they have receded, kinda makes the plant look ready to harvest, to me anyway. Ive also heard it described as hardened, which I would agree with as well. Back to the swollen calyxes you were talking about Ras, they do feel hardened. But that is something I have learned to judge over time with experience.

Why is there absolutely no frost on that girl?

My girls are only 24 days into flowering and my weakest plant has significantly more trich than this lil gal  whats going on here?

Maybe it's not as potent, or maybe you're just awesome.  Here's another one of my plants that's about 4 weeks into flower:

Were you just trying to shit on my plants, or do you honestly think that all strains are created equal?  That was just one of may lateral buds developing, not even the best one (just had it on file).

Anyways, thanks for the positive feedback from the rest of y'all.

These plants were all basically throw aways from a friend who was moving and didn't have the space/desire to care for them.  They were nutrient deficient, heavily under-watered, infested with at least 3 different pests, and with winter approaching, they were basically on death's door.  My obsessive care of them has turned them around amazingly in my opinion.

I have no details on the genetics of my plants, but I can tell you that the one in question is likely sativa, is about 20" tall, has a max circumference of about 170mm (or 6 1/2"), gets it's outdoor light all day, and sleeps in my well ventilated but dark closet, and may have been flowering for between 40 - 48 days.

I know that isn't all that helpful, but I'm learning as I do it, and though I keep an extensive grow log, was unsure at the time what the beginning of flowering would even look like (which I've subsequently learned), so have only murky records regarding that.

About the scope, were you guys saying 12X or 12 bucks?  I'm a watchmaker and have 10X loupes laying around every where.  That's a damn decent close up in my opinion - so what exactly would I be looking for?

Thanks again.

Woah woah... lol

Not at all, it just seems like something is wrong...
Obviously all strains arent equal but getting ready to harvest?  meanign you must be 6-8 weeks in and no frost?

IMO that doesnt seem right...
Sorry, maybe you are being a little too sensitive..
Good luck with your grow.

(looked like a top cola too me...)
Your response contradicts your OP.

Happy growing.

I have a 60-100x scope and it is a pain in the ass. I've heard that 30-60x is better, but I don't know that from personal experience.

You start the flowering time when you switch to 12/12 lights. It will probably take 2-3 weeks before she really looks like she's flowering. Maybe a little sooner, but not much. You could start the clock when she starts throwing out white hairs and bulking up a bit, but that would be hard to judge IMO.

And I don't think justshrrominn meant any disrespect. I think he was trying to diagnose the situation to try and offer the best advice he has for you.  After all you are a noob at this....we all have to start somewhere. My first time I grew bagseed in a 2 liter coke bottle with miracle grow soil. About 2-3 weeks into flower she was throwing pistils everywhere so I fed her....full strength. Wish I had someone to yell....."STOP!!!". I killed her of course. Live and learn. Hopefully learn from other peoples mistakes to save you the grief. That death for me was o so close to the end of my pharming. Good luck to you bro, and post us some bud porn. We all like to see that frosty, sticky goodness!

Haha yeah tone is hard to read on the internets.

And I'm just saying, from what I see of the calyxes, shes not ready and I'd personally give her a little while longer.

I know its very difficult to wait, and even if you DID get impatient and chop her now, she'd still get you plenty toasted.

Personally, I'd keep flushing for another week or 2 and watch her fatten up. It won't add any verticle growth at this point (or, it shouldn't anyway) but it'll go from 2 finger width to 3 finger width sometimes in those last 2 weeks.

If you notice she isn't changing up much and you've gave it a good flush, just chop her down as  you see fit. A few days over isn't going to ruin it, and a few days early isn't going to ruin it either.

You make it sound like I had a total freak-out, I just don't tolerate trolls - so I asked you what your intention was. Is that not fair?  Deciphering insult from true concern is incredibly difficult over the internet.  I thought you'd know that the lack of "frost" means that it's a much weaker strain.

Not every plant is going to be white widow - and i struggle to comprehend that you think some thing's wrong with it based solely on that.  I mean... it's 'clawed' pretty bad but you didn't notice that.

That was a lateral bud by the way, NOT the kola, there's no way for you to correct me based off that pic.  I bonsai'd that plant so it's not anything like the columnar type pot up top.

You had nothing positive or helpful to contribute, so you're automatically gonna draw fire for conjecturing instead of informing - next time don't be so vague as to what you mean and their won't be room for misinterpretation.

...I mean, if you had advice that would be different - like, what exactly is wrong with it then?  I can take all the shots you need.

I'll just get a 30x - anything higher would be overkill.  Thanks for all the helpful feedback, that's a lot of good info I can use.

Why would over 30x be overkill!?  I have the 60x-100x from radioshack and it works perfect!  go read the reviews on the MM-100

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2179604#showFullReviews ;

and then you will really see why they even sell this item.  90% of people buy it for looking at trichomes

I don't know, I just figured trying to steady and focus in on that amount of magnification would be difficult with my unsteady hands.  If it's the way to go then I'll get it.

To look you simply cut a very small piece of sugar leaf off of the plant.  Set it on a table then use it to look.  You only need a very small piece from here and there to check.

I had some plants that looked like that.
I think the issue was heat.  Room temp was about 105.
I cropped out and it was pretty weak bunk.
Are you re-using your soil/sunshine mix??  I have had issues with re-used soil as well.
Lesson learned:  Spend the $$$ on fresh soiless mix and if your room gets too hot, spend some money on air-cooled lights.

I hope this helps.
