Using disposable cups for seedlings
    #588970 - 09/27/11 02:54 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Ok guys,
I recieved my seedpack today, and have started them off with the wet paper towel method

Anyways, I plan to put them into small disposable cups to start, as i've seen in grow videos on youtube.

Do I need to punch any holes into the bottom of the cups to allow water to drain? Or are the cups left as is. I couldn't tell if they had holes in the bottom or not.

Thanks
Magickz

Punch holes, definitely. If you overwater, evaporative action won't act quickly enough to balance the moisture levels and your roots will drown/rot.  The holes allow excess water to drain through the substrate and create more surface area for evaporation.

Starting in cups has some advantages and disadvantages that I can tell...

If you are using CFL's or T5 for veg you can fit more plants under less lights in those cups. Also this way you can start off with less materials and work your way up repotting as necessary... i find a quick watering and squeezing gently around the bottom of the cup while its upside down releases the roots without ripping them out of the bottom of the cup.

I think the disadvantage is your plant will grow slower, and you can get rootbound really fast in those cups so you're bound to have to transplant them soon anyways, and most experienced hands will say to start the seedlings off in the size of pot you plan to finish in, giving your plant the best chance at success from the beginning.

Now you're asking why I still use the cups? I have a messed up spine and can't move big pots around and veg with a little bit of T5HO's, and eventually transplant things into their homes in the flowering room so I dont have to haul giant pots around. (I can barely lift 4litres milk without mega pain). In the future this won't be neceassary since I'll be vegging and flowering in the same room at my new location.

Thanks for the info guys
I read that starting in big pots, the soil will dry out much quicker, which is why I plan to start in cups. Also, the ease of transplanting was annother factor in me deciding to use cups

Drainage is a must.

I personally don't like to use cups because they are pretty flimsy.

Also, they have a high center of gravity causing them to fall over and stuff.

If you got em use em but I'd just go out and get the right tool for the job.

I went out and got 6 small plant pots to start with.
Theyre all square and fits 3 in a tray so it doesnt take up much space.
I'll plant my seeds into these when the seeds sprout.
Thanks Guys

I placed my seeds between wet paper towels on a plate, then put the plate in a large zip lock bag. It was then placed into my wardrobe.
36 hours later, all seeds had germinated and have been placed into the pots. Since my lights arent up and running (reflector assembly had some missing parts) I placed the pots outside, and covered them with gladwrap so the water doesnt all evaporate and dry up.
Cant wait, hope theyre all girls

um...immediately. You're creating an anaerobic environment which encourages anaerobic (bad) bacterial formation. Your soil needs to breathe to be healthy.

Thanks for the headsup.
I thought it was ok to keep the wrap on em till they sprouted according to something I saw on a YouTube vid.

Anyways, I've taken the wrap off.

Cheers

not sure about the utube vid but 100% sealed is a bad idea in my opinion

I have some people use like slurpee cups with a dome, putting a piece of tape over the top and poking a hole in that tape though

Yup, I've taken it off, lucky it was only on there for a couple hours.
I've started a grow diary, that way when I make another blunder, hopefully a more experienced member can point it out before it causes to much damage.

Just wondering, after the roots sprout and the seed is planted, how long until i see some growth above the soil?
