Will coir get moldy?
    #585669 - 09/12/11 08:18 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, I hate trying to break up those bricks of coir so I just want to expand the whole fucker at one time. I am definitely not going to use the whole thing however.

Since I have to get it wet to expand it, and I plan on storing it in a big rubbermaid bin, will it get moldy?

How about perilite? Will that get moldy? (I have to rinse it and clean it up) I don't want to use all of it at once, so I'll be storing the wet(ish) perilite in a different container. I don't have the right ratio of coir > perilite so I'm keeping them separate.

I thought neither of them grew mold, thats why people use them for mushroom growing, but I wasn't sure.

I posted in here instead of MJ cultivation because I know some of you use the stuff for shroomies and don't check the cultivation forum. Also, I need an answer kinda quick because this is my activity for this morning.

As long as you let it lose some moisture before putting all into a sealed tub, you should have nothing to worry about.

Mushrooms and mold are both fungus so of course the perlite will grow it.  Just make sure the stuff is sterile, wet or not, and you will be fine.  Use a 1% bleach solution if you want and rinse it off whenever you need it.

Alright cool.

The tub has holes drilled in the lid from an old experiment anyway

Thanks for the quick response. Fuck this shit is messy

See, the thing is, the way I understood it is that the mushrooms don't actually grow ON it, just use it as a bonding agent. I thought they fed off of your BRF, grains, etc and the coir was more of a "filler" than anything else, to encourage them to spread out over a wide area.

I thought as long as there wasn't any foreign nasties in the mix that it wouldn't grow any mold on its own.

Thats why I asked

Well anything can get moldy so long as there is food for the mold to feed from.  So you are right as long as there are no foreign nasties it will be fine.

Perlite certainly does suck to work with. I hate the stuff and will never work with it. It is messy and there are much more effective products that accomplish the same goal.

For the coir, if you are going to expand it all you should take the excess moisture out of it before you even sterilize it. After you sterilize it then it will be pretty dry (we use an oven and turkey bags to sterilize) and you can store the rest for several months with no probelm. I would just chop the brick in half and only expand what you need to though.

What the hell are you using both perlite and coir for anyways? They accomplish the exact same thing.

You growing boomers or MJ?

They are less conspicuous to grow than MJ, unless you are in a state that has medical marijuana. No odor, no special lighting or anything. Profit margins are higher

I don't really do shroomies myself and I'm no hustler. I only grow the herbage to save myself money and keep myself away from drug dealers :/

I used to be all about that shit, but now I don't anymore. I dunno, just not my scene anymore.

I would grow bud if I a) had the space and b) had the money to make a proper setup. My main issue is space though. I am renting out a bedroom in a 2 bedroom apartment. Maybe once my lease is up here I will look into getting a 1 bedroom place and using the bedroom as a grow room and sleep in the living room. That was my original plan but my credit sucked and I am only paying 350 a month here for everything included (except internet)

I hate core for plants (it is good to grow plants in I just hate the stuff, it's a me thing) and it will mold unless you let it dry like has already been said here.

I do like coir as a casing for these guys though

I thought about getting a martha greenhouse like yours. That is actually what I did my first grow in about 4-5 years ago but I already had a bunch of tubs with holes drilled in them and clear plastic lids so I figured I would save myself 50$ and use what I had. So far I have spent 180$ on supplies but I have just about everything that I need
