My 'new' LST method
    #584491 - 09/08/11 12:09 AM (5 years, 2 months ago)

Have done four previous indoor grows with no problems. This time, however, my 5 gallon bubble bucket plant turned into a frikken jungle. The other three plants are in 2 liter soiless pots. OK, so I trimmed her back, but she is the only plant refusing to flower after four weeks. Oh, she has hairs all over and is definitely not a male, but instead just wants to keep growing rather than bud. Flowered at 10", she has zoomed up to over 48", pushed into my light and is still going both up and out like and sucks up a 32oz of water per day, vs. about 6 ounces for the others.

So, I patiently and scientifically snapped, not bent, the top 14" of DankZilla over at 90 degrees. The question is: Will the the top survive such abuse and keep growing or will it wither and die?

More impotantly, will she start budding some time this year?

No, she is a second generation Nirvana NL *BB. They usually peak around 32". Here is the crazy part, I topped her four times early in veg to keep her low. She towers over the untopped plants. Then I pruned half the canopy to slow her down, but there is no stopping her. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!

Still no sign of budding going into week 5.

Yes they do. I got three ounces of primo-looking bud my last grow. Everyone that sees them "Oohs!" and "Aahs!", but alas it has zero odor, no flavor and no buzz. Some strains you can smell a mile away. This you cannot smell from 6 inches. I use it for cooking where it has some kick. I only got NL*BB (discontinued now - duh!) because I have no place for an air scrubber and they are very low odor in flower.

I have some real beans coming for next grow. This round is just to test my homemade LED lamp. The plants are loving it, but it will probably still suck.

What strain/s do you recommend? It cannot be stinky or very tall.

If you're lacking odor, favor, and buzz then it's most likely a feed or eviromental problem.

What size is the room, and light?
What feed are you using and at what ppm/ec?

I also recommend iieing it down over supercropping or topping, because I prefer not to over stress my plants.
Supercropping and topping are imo HST, not LST.

It sounds like a strong sativa which can stretch into it's sixth week easily, and may take up to 14 weeks to finish.

I looked more closely and it does seem much more like a sativa dominant hyrbid as the leaves are slender and the node spacing is far apart, but the only beans I had were NL*BB crossed with itself.

Could be. My main problems are excessive heat and low humidity here in Vegas. I have a tiny 2' * 2' space with insufficient cooling and ventilation. Nothing I can do to correct that in my current situation.

I am going to start some A-Train in November when the temps will be fine until April or May.

Here is my last grow 2 weeks before harvest:

At harvest:

Current grow about two weeks ago:

You can see about a third of her in the photo.

Do you have any ventilation?
I don't see any sighs of heat related stress in those pictures.

But if I'm not mistaken NL and BB are both hybreds themselves, which would give the possibilities of seeing many different traits from one seed to another.
Genetics are funny that way.

Also how much light do you have in there?
Appears to be led.

About 140w of DIY LED. The color rendering is nice because I use 80w of full spectrum warm white.

I put plenty of ice in the BB twice a day to keep her cool and I am able to keep the closet door open to use the house AC.

Only have one small fan. It is very, very tight.

Hopefully in the future I will have access to a 5' * 4' space that I can cool and vent and air scrub properly. In the interim, I am learning more with every grow.

Nirvana provides a great product.  There are a hundred possible reasons why your buds have a low odor and little to no taste.  But it's not Nirvana's fault.

Must be recessive sativa dominant genes. Small buds are finally starting to form going into week 6. Healthy, but tiny.

Must... wait... :waits:

TY. Took me three generations of commercial lights and 2 DIY lights. I have another redesign in the works.

If you're redesigning I'd suggest a little more red 660 to 630 to ur mix.

You can determine my deep red to red ratio from the photo?

Yes and no, I'm going more from this post you made earlier in the thread.

Imo, that's a bit to much warm white, your reds should be the dominate spectrum for flowering.

I'd love to trade my 400w hps for a LED setup that actually works.

Working on a redesign eh? Lemme know if you're interested in trading/selling the old one.

Warm white is not a color but a spectrum that includes plenty of red, deep red and far red. The below spectrum is not typical of other warm white LEDs which contain too much yellow and green:

It took me a long time to find such a good spectrum as this LED was not specifically designed for horticultural purposes.

Here is the deal: the only artifical light sources that are not spikey are incandescent, plasma and CMH and white LEDs. The rest are not continuous, but have huge spikes at certain frequencies. We know that cannabis responds best to blue and red frequencies, but other psectra also play less critical, but equally important roles. Just because the plant can adapt to inferior spectra does not mean it is optimal.

My plants seem to be thriving (I would need a side-by-side comparison to make a qualitative statement) more than under the strictly red/blue monochromatic LEDs.

Also the warm white wide angle arrays I use (most tout their narrow angle LEDS) seem to put out a more even light blanket or spread whereas the small powerful red/blue LEDs either tend to burn the leaves if too close or leave gaps as they are miniature spotlights.
