Physics question...
    #573358 - 07/20/11 11:07 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Forgive me if this is extremely common knowledge...I asked a few of my friends, and they all said it seemed to make sense, but nobody could really answer my questions.

I never took physics in school...so bare with me here.

I recently read an article about a dude who lost his ipod out of his pocket during a skydive, and found it still working. Neat enough...

However, I wonder at what height is terminal velocity reached for something like that? How much difference is there falling out of a plane in comparison to getting tossed off of the top of a very tall building - say a skyscaper or something like that.

I guess what I'm asking is, is there a point where the height of the drop becomes a negligible factor? Its gotta be different based upon the object...

I dunno, just got me thinking.

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

Surface area and density effect drag, unless I'm mistaken.

I'm unfortunately no physicist.

there is a point where it reaches maximum velocity

i have no idea what it is though

See, that term pedo gets thrown around a lot.
Is a 16 year old guy having sex w/a 16 year old girl a pedophile?
If not, then how is a 30 year old considered a pedophile for doing the same thing?
I think y'all need to look up the definition for pedophile.

It depends on a few factors but yes, I believe some items will reach terminal velocity when dropped off high buildings therefore the force of their fall is no different than had they fallen from an airplane.

Not really sure if that's what you're asking though.

you know what i did in english class? I came to class stoned out of my mind every day, i chugged vodka in the back of class, i put dead fish in the ceiling tiles. i put a gallon of old milk and orange juice in the file cabinet before winter vacation. i brought snakes in a tied up sweater and let them loose during class. i didnt go to school to learn, i went because i had to. i didnt care, and i didn't fucking listen to that stupid bitch. and i still don't fucking care. i tore the pages out of her books and burned them, and threw away all the books in the class, two books per day.  :twobooks:

9.8 meters per second squared.  Don't have an answer to your question though.  I remember reading an article about this but I thought it was an iphone and they used something within the hardware of the phone to locate it or some bs like that.  but that's semantics to you i think.  let us know if you get the straight dope.  I take it you've already googled it?

9.8 is the speed of gravity but I think he was asking at what height the phone would reach that terminal velocity.

yeah, i knew 9.8 wasn't what he was looking for but it related enough to throw it up there since no one else had.

Really there isn't enough info to answer his question except the last part in which case height would become a negligible factor regarding the force of the fall after an object has reached terminal velocity.

Yeah, thats what I figured. I don't really have enough info to get a 100% accurate answer, I was just wondering if there was a building tall enough to equal out to the plane height thing.

http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/termv.html

Check that and plug in your desired info, but I think terminal velocity is actually reached relatively quickly compared to how long the fall out of a plane is so to answer your question yea no difference.  Although technically the air is thinner at higher altitudes which would in turn create less drag and a higher terminal velocity.  But that would obviously change whilst falling.
