my 1st plants... Any Advice???
    #568159 - 06/28/11 08:29 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I have just set up an account and will begin to post about my two little guys. Many plants sprouted in my smoke spot back in April. Out of them I kept these two just for fun.  They are currently outside in good Ol' dirt. I only fertilize them twice a month with some Superthrive. They drink about a gallon of water every other day. I just topped them and they both turned black just at the cut spot.

Does anyone know why that turned black?? Should I be worried?

I am considering tying the branches down with a fishing line. Any advice, criticism, or other input would be much appreciated.

PLANT A

PLANT B

fyi...superthrive is not a fertilizer. It can be used at every watering, but they'll need more than just that. Use some stretchy landscape ties to tie the girls down. I pick mine up at a local hardware store. It'll stretch with the plant. Fishing line may not be so forgiving. Unless you're able to check on them frequently. If they're in good soil and getting good light....they'll take right off.

honestly just cover the girls in composted manure and let the water do the rest of the work. they should turn out fat.

Usually if you top them and they bleed red and it turns black the soil is a little to acidic..
By any chance did you see a tiny drop of red form after you topped?

I got some Osmocote today at Walmart for fertilizer. It's 19 6 12. Also added some mulch to keep them drinking. Those bands sound good. 'll check them out asap. new pics coming soon.

So added some mulch and topped them both. Still considering to stake them or not, what would be the best way?

These pics are after just one day of mulch and being topped, the mulch has now been doubled.

I added some Osmocote today. also ordered some fox farm Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz, and Cha Ching for August. I plan on giving them  the fox farm to induce flowering. good plan?

I think your plants would turn out better without chemical fertilizer or hydroponic fertilizers. Just use some manure in the beginning of the growth cycle. The plants use all the nitrogen and by the end start using the potassium and phosphorus. Since their already in the ground there probably is already a lot of nutrition there and its also likely that there are a lot of beneficial soil micro-organisms which will always make for a healthier plant than chemical fertilizers like osmocote. In fact osmocote will piss off the micro-organisms making your plant more dependent on the artificial shit IMO.

well the soil is pretty much trash so I figured a fertilizer would improve the quality of buds and keep my plant strong. What do yall think of Superthrive? I've heard a lot of people using it every watering but just twice a week seems to be causing a white salt ring to rise in the soil..

superthrive is the shit! but lay off a little. don't water so often and let nature do a little of the work. which may be a bit of a problem in texas, yall always seem to have drought in the summer. chemical ferts are full of salts, but your plants don't seem to be suffering from any salt buildup. might want to give organics a shot, like some fish emulsion. then lay the blossom boosters on em in sep. best of luck, hope you wind up with twin girls:thumbup:

They're def looking better and better.Plant A has, since being topped, shot out two tops. Plant B on the other hand just kept growing straight up. Topped her again today to see what happens. Still unsure about staking the branches out just yet. They seem to move a lot side to side with the sun throughout the day and I don't want to cause them to strain....

So I've got a question. Fan leafs. What are their significance and needs? Can I trim them for new growth elsewhere???

Fan leaves are the solar panels of your plant. Removing some will do more harm than good.... Let'em be. This is my oppinion....which i know is shared by many others. Though there has been some discussion on the topic. Just ask magash...he'll give ya the whole solar panel example

so check it.... Plant B is a male on the left side of a tree and Plant A is unknown on the right side. So i was thinking of doing a little construction and removing B (male) completely and transplanting A to the better spot. The reason for the transfer is that B has always seem to have the better spot as far as sunlight and level ground and bugs. A has riddled with bug bites and has always fell to an akward position at the end of the day.... WHAT DO WE SAY??? Can I move A into B's old spot?????

its gonna shock the shit out of her considering its roots are a good 4 ft deep by now. so if your willing to risk that shock go for it, just make sure you do it at night and have plenty of water on hand to ease the transition.
