Yeah, these HID lights kind of seem like novelty to me.  I have to wonder how they caught on though as they were originally used for industrial lighting in warehouses; there are always some on the ground outside of a hotel.  I've always thought they seemed pretty cool but kind of clamorous.  For instance, they require a seperate (expensive) "ballast" to run as well as a special socket.  They get extremely extremely hot and seem to vary in "quality".  I do think they are a must have for any large sclae grow though.  CFLs are just really energy efficient and LEDs are space ship tail lights compared to a nice 600W MH.  What seperates HID lamps from others is their lumen output, they suck up a whole lot of energy, but put out a lot of growable light at the same time.

I've never grown with HID lamps, but I do have 2 chinese made LED panels.  They work very well, but I don't think their output can be put in the same category as HID lamps.  They are also a lot more expensive.  I think their benefits include their broad spectrums and energy efficiency.  I'd like to see them replace HIDs one day =) It might save some old men their scalps. 

They are really fun to grow with; LEDs.

I do the MH for veg and HPS for flower thing.

Want a little excitement just let one of those bulbs heat up and put one drop of cold water on it.
