how much did that camera cost you? what are the specs? is it just a point and shoot?
I am about to buy a new camera and need some tips. Ive always owned shitty cameras

The Canon T1i (AKA D500) is an SLR that shoots 15mp and runs around $650. It's in that weird semi-pro range between the really really nice SLRs and the cheap SLRs. It's definitely good enough for some reasonably sized prints but the sensor is good enough that you can start to see some of the (minor) failings of the kit lens at 100% zoom.

I just picked one of these up as well and love it. (Filled out my kit with the 50mm f1.8 prime and the EF 70-300mm  )

There might be some good prices right after Christmas at some electronics stores. Canons are pretty good.
