Yep, learning is the first step in this hobby/profession. I would suggest getting this book. it will be the BEST $20 spent on this hobby, no matter how big/small your grow.

Too many variables to answer wheter one will yield more than the other man.
You need to get the book mentioned and start researching grow room construction first off. Then decide what medium you want to grow with, i.e. hydro, soil, soiless.
You will then need to your hands on a strain.
as far as your grow room goes start thinking about your ventilation system, cooling factors, both your hood and the room in general. How much in the way of lights your going to want., etc.
There is really way too much to go over in just one response but those will get you started. This hobby is WAY more complicated than growing mushies in my opinion. take your time. Don't rush in. and read read read.

if you tell us how much you want to yield we could give you a ballpark estimate as to how big (how many watts) your grow will need.

Well, 4-6 plants isn't really gonna be SoG, and you certainly aren't gonna need a whole bedroom for your target yield, you could pull triple that yield from a medium sized closet. Not to mention that number of plants using sea of green is gonna yield a good bit lower than if you were to veg 'em out a little and use bigger containers. Then you come to the choice of Soil or Hydro..
Aside from that, a 600w light will meet your goals without trouble and still leave room for improvement. Also, insulation isn't really gonna cut down smell, just confine it, then when you open the door your whole house gets blasted with that super loud concentrated smell, look into carbon filters/scrubbers, they work wonders on odor.

I think the more I learn, SoG is not ideal for a first grow. I would love to try it some time later.
I am leaning toward hempy buckets. Is it reasonable to expect 3-4 ounces from 4-6 plants if I buy a decent light, buy decent equipment, and follow all directions in the tek?

oh definitely. you can easily get more than that with a simple 400w. hell, there's a grow on icmag where a guy gets a pound with a scrog set up in a little cab with a single 400w light. pretty epic pictures and story.
