Raids uncover Sydney's $14m suburban drug farm chain: police Paul Tatnell September 23, 2010 - 2:18PM
Police have seized an estimated $14 million worth of cannabis following a series of raids across south-west Sydney today.
Police say 220 officers raided 16 homes simultaneously just after 8am and have so far seized 2296 plants and 500 kilograms of cannabis leaf.
Eight people have been arrested.
It is alleged by police that the syndicate targeted in the raids is involved in large-scale cultivation of cannabis.
Police claim the syndicate operates under a "franchise structure" and recruits financially vulnerable people, primarily of South-East Asian background.
One of the homes raided allegedly came under suspicion after electricians noticed the electrical wiring had been "dangerously" modified, police said.
Police claim the Greenacre house, which was occupied by two adults and two children, was "close to catching fire" due to the modifications.
Police will allege a number of homes raided had their electrical wiring altered to cultivate cannabis.
The raids were co-ordinated by Strike Force Cooinbil, comprising detectives from the State Crime Command's Asian Crime Squad and South West Metropolitan Region, which was established to investigate hydroponic cannabis cultivation.
Asian Crime Squad Commander acting Detective Superintendent Scott Cook, said the "cultivation of cannabis in confined areas such as suburban homes is dangerous".
"The chemicals used in the hydroponic cultivation of cannabis are toxic and can prove hazardous when used in residential areas," he said.
Separately, three men have been charged and more than 4.7 kilograms of drugs and $128,000 cash were seized after police raids in Sydney’s eastern suburbs yesterday.
------------
"Asian Crime Squad Commander acting Detective Superintendent Scott Cook, said the "cultivation of cannabis in confined areas such as suburban homes is dangerous".
"The chemicals used in the hydroponic cultivation of cannabis are toxic and can prove hazardous when used in residential areas," he said."
This is the type of ignorance that plagues the world. One person is allowed to say the wrong thing, but it is publicly published as truth.
News is biased, and it ruins the world.

How can they allege something like that? Just because you found 2,300 plants and over 500kg of smokeables doesn't mean they have anything to do with cultivation. Silly stupid cops alleging things

"The chemicals used in the hydroponic cultivation of cannabis are toxic and can prove hazardous when used in residential areas," he said."
So is household bleach, pool acid, cleaning products, medicine cabinet etc etc. What exactly is his point? They are grasping at straws here.
