Canada (AHN) - Smoking cannabis reduces pain, improves mood and helps sleep in chronic pain sufferers, according to a new study from Canadian researchers.
Scientists with McGill University Health Center conducted a controlled trial including 21 participants who are 18 years old and older and who suffer from chronic pain.
The participants were given marijuana with three different THC levels – 2.5 percent, 6 percent and 9.4 percent. Some were given a placebo with no THC.
Participants who smoked pot with the most THC reported the best sleep quality. Anxiety and depression also decreased in the group given the 9.4-percent THC cannabis compared with the placebo group.
The best results came when the participants smoked the marijuana three times a day, five days a week.
Chronic pain sufferers typically take pharmaceutical drugs like opioids, anticonvulsants, antidepressants and local anesthetics. The efficacy of these drugs vary and all have side effects that make them unappealing to some patients, the researchers said in a statement.
A report on the study is published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

It's nice to have studies like this done so there is a backbone behind the movement instead of.
