Purple Sap
    #372158 - 02/24/10 01:09 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Recently my Purple AK's put off what looked like little droplets of purple sap on the uppermost branches. The only change to them was a transplant into a bigger pot, and they were put next to the air intake. I assume that the cold air triggered some purpling or something but one of my partners is a bit suspicious. Could any purple experts help me put his fears to rest?

I have no pictures... sorry

Thanks for the help!

Weird man. Pics would be sweet. I have no idea what would cause that. I'll bump this for you though. Welcome to the growery by the way!

The sap thing happens to a lot of people, I've had it happen with no negative side-effects. Its something that plants do, but I've never heard a good reason why.

purple sap, huh.  did you smoke it?  What's the problem?  I would love to see a picture of that too.  I've never heard of this.  Welcome to the Growery!

where do you think I could go to get a definate answer? I saw some really old posts that claimed they had seen this but nobody could answer as to whether this was normal or not...

I think its fine, my partners don't share my optimism...

I found some articles mentioning the presence of anthocyanins in sap but what would cause it to bleed through the stems? it was already dried when I saw it, and i have seen other MMJ strains do a clear bleed through... but never found out why...

excerpt of one article

- The color produced by anthocyanins is sensitive to the pH, or degree of acidity, of the juice inside the plant cells -- the cell sap -- in which they find themselves. If the sap is very acidic, anthocyanin imparts a bright red color; if the sap is less acidic, its color is more purple.

it could be from anything. you trim any leaves  or pull any off? do you have any bugs? lots of bugs tap into the vascular system of plants. even a strong wind may crack something.  i wouldnt worry about it unless the plant looks sick otherwise, its possible you have a bit to much phosphorus maybe and that is causing the plant to grow larger then its means so to speak. just a thought.

peace

no stress on the plants, absolutely no bugs, they were just in a bit colder of a spot... hasn't repeated since. I think I will close the file here...
