that no matter how calm/quiet it is during the day, nighttime will always be quieter? could it be that your senses are heightened due to the darkness?
of course there's less activity going on at night, but it just always seems to be louder no matter how quiet the day is

it could be applied to standing in the middle of nowhere too. like say, a field. you'd more than likely hear someone walking up behind you more vividly in the dark

also, just walking out in the backyard during the day I hear birds, neighbor's pets, and then the everyday noises like traffic and so on.

I think it's got to do with the lack of cars(as said above) being out and about, causing a more wildlife friendly atmosphere.

I notice if its pitch black in a room and you have you eyes closed you can tell where the walls are just from listening. Might be from hearing your breathing off the walls or something. Its really weird.

man I've heard a lot about depth perception as well. It's amazing thinking about those senses we use little of.

We definitely rely on our ears more during the night. At least that is true in regards to wild humans. Obviously it will take more than a couple thousand years of domestication to rid us of our heightened nighttime hearing.
