anyone use natural anti-depressants?
    #353763 - 01/26/10 08:54 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

...other than Cannabis?

I keep telling myself I don't have depression but I think it's about time that I just accept the fact that I do.

Cannabis is what keeps me stable, I'm completely fine when I'm using it.  It's when I'm not using it that things go downhill.  This isn't a side effect from smoking, or withdrawal from not smoking.  However cannabis is not an option for me right now...  no friends in this area and no vehicle to drive because I'm rebuilding it.

What are some other legal herbal anti-depressants that are effective?

Fish Oil

    * Type: Nutritional Supplement
    * How Fish Oil Treats Depression: Rather than stimulating a change in brain chemistry, like pharmaceutical SSRIs and most herbal antidepressants, fish oil addresses the issue of omega-3 fat deficiency, a common problem that many nutritionists believe to be a common cause of depression.

Kanna

    * Type: Medicinal Herb
    * How Kanna Treats Depression: Kanna contains the natural herbal compound Mesembrine, a PDE4 inhibitor. This class of compounds has been used to treat depression, anxiety, and even psychosis.

Sam-e

    * Type: Nutritional Supplement
    * How Sam-e Treats Depression: Sam-e is a powerful coenzyme that has reached a peak in popularity over the last decade. It is known to be nootropic, meaning that it enhances cognitive function, and many well-controlled studies have proven its safety and efficacy in treating depression and other psychiatric illnesses.

St. John's Wort

# Type:Medicinal Herb
# How St. John's Wort Treats Depression: Some studies have shown that St. John's wort inhibits the uptake of 5-HT, or serotonin, making it a form of natural SSRI. Hypericin, the active antidepressant compound in the herb, has been shown by dozens of placebo-controlled studies to combat mild to moderate depression with fewer side effects than most pharmaceutical drugs.

there's a couple for ya.

Sperm is an anti-depressant for women.

If you cum inside your lady on a regular basis they will possibly show a positive increase in mood.  I guess it gets absorbed into the blood stream through the vaginal walls/membranes.  I don't remember if it works if they swallow your baby batter but I know it does vaginally.

Yes actually, I have noticed that instead of moping around the house a lot. I actually want to go out and do things (kinda like I used to). Its a great stress reliever. And my anxiety (although still there) is getting better.

it just takes using it for 2-4 weeks before you notice any difference

best suggestion

fish oil is safe and good for the heart, i don't know how effective on depression it is.

5-htp works fairly well also.

but there is no better substitute than eating, sleeping, and exercising well.

good luck

IMO the best cure for depression is doing something constructive, something you can see improvement in and accomplishment in; for me it's playing guitar.

I might try exercising again.  I haven't done much at all this winter.  If my plans would have worked out I would have been snowboarding all winter and that would have of coursed kept me in shape, but I'm in the nasty Texas winter where there's not much to do till spring so I definitely think I have a case of the winter blues.

In the warmer months I'm on a bike for about 20 miles a day but I hate riding in the cold.

My sleep and eating habits have suffered as well.  I'll start with the basics and see if I have any improvements.

Thanks for the suggestions :peace:

Take that advice Fox. If you are interested in a healthy way of relieving depression/anxiety.

I was on paxil for years when I was young. It did help me....but did not teach me how to cope with the problems that were haunting me internally. When I got off the anti-depressant all my issues  emerged and  I had to discover real ways to cope with anxiety and depression.

my chem free approach

When life is getting too much for me a little self meditation and quality time with mother nature always helps me reason with my inner demons.

Some good tunes always help too.

But honestly when I get worked up I grab my dog and head north. Spend the day with mother nature away from the rest of civilization. No cars, developments, nothin. Just me,my dog, and the wilderness. That is my cure.

QFT

Growing again hit the spot for me...

I find that it's all about keeping your mind busy.  Not necessarily your body, but that does help because it's a natural trigger for endorphins to be released into the system which give you that natural high from exercise.

For me though, I'm in shape so exercise isn't necessary or really a good option in the frigid winter, so try finding something you can repeat in your free time away from the van project, or just focus more of your time on that.  Usually completing stages in a project makes me feel better about myself for each part I finish/accomplish.  It gives me a sense of worth to see something as simple as a brand new grow chamber coming together.  I find the more I sit around and do nothing, the more depressed I get.  It's a direct correlation IMO.

Enough of my rant.  Don't forget the semen!

I also find that sunlight  :feelsgoodman:

And i read that it produces Vitamin D which is also supposed to balance you out.

I live in a sunny area, and since arriving i have noticed that the sun just energizes me and really :feelsgoodman:

Back when i was in Michigan, this time of year would always bring me down. :feelsbadman:  The cold, snowy winter time blues! Get some sun, surround yourself with family and friends and definatly keep your self going and doing stuff to help pass the time away. Idle minds are the devils playground!

This is great advice.

I also recommend multivitamins, but nothin' beats a day out in the sun, a vacation, relax take a bath, :feelsgoodman:

I've been using st.johns wort for a while now, and I am not sure if it really helps, regardless if it's a placebo or not, I notice I am more :feelsgoodman: with it and it seems to relieve stress as it is an anxiolytic, but

doin' constructive thangs :feelsgoodman: too.

Look into nootropics too, because stress and anxiety are precursors for depression.

I suggest looking into l-theanine and/or aniracetam,

valerian root is :feelsgoodman: too.

Thanks a lot guys, and girl :crazy2:, for the positive and helpful responses.

I think what would really help me is finding out why I'm even feeling this way, which I have no clue.

I keep my mind busy.  I'm an avid musician, I'm head-deep in a project rebuilding my van, I do film photography which is going great... I have a lot going on right now and a lot of really good things going for me... so it's not like an "ohhhhh I'm so emo, I hate myself and life" kinda depression.  I've been noticing major mood swings.  One day I'll be on top of the world, the next I feel like life is just too much for me(not that I would do anything to end it, never).  The slightest negativity from people will turn an amazing day into a day that I really would just like to forget.

I know what the cure is, and that is for me to get back on the road and start traveling again... but the simple fact that I can't leave this hellhole of north Texas until Fall makes it very hard for me to be happy.

I need a major cleanse.  I've had the ingredients for ayahuasca for a couple years now but have been waiting for the right time to partake.  I have much experience with DMT so I know what I'm getting myself into.  I think the time has come, but I'm just afraid... I know it's going to be a very difficult experience because I have a lot of negative energy and spirits that I need to face and take stand against.  That's the reasoning for my new sig, to remind myself each day that this medicine is going to help me.

Okay rant over.  Thanks again guys, I knew yall wouldn't let me down!

I would even go so far as to say that psychedelics are one of the few reasons why I am willing to wake up each and every morning.

Hey Fox,

Just something simple and small that may help: tea.

When I'm out of pot or just don't feel like smoking and feel kinda down or shitty I usually drink mint tea. Dunno, always makes me feel better.

What's up Fox?  Sorry to hear your having issues with depression.  I have a good friend whose marriage ended because of how late he was diagnosed with depression, and you can imagine how that affected him.

I have a small obsession with naturalistic medicine, so allow me to offer a few other tips:

Ginger, peppermint, Ginkgo Biloba, and Siberian Ginseng are good (don't use ginseng if you have any issues with blood sugar or blood pressure though) and Kava Kava is a good solution but only when you're feeling the effects of depression, you don't want to use it long-term.
Somebody mentioned St. John's Wort which acts much like an MAOI, and is good for rebalancing brain chemistry, but be careful with hallucinogens mixed with SJW, your trip will be SUPER intense.

In terms of diet, if your carb consumption is too low, your body can't produce serotonin, which leads to depression, so get some brown rice, grains, soybeans, etc. to boost healthy carb intake.
NO DIET SODAS...the synthetic sweeteners block serotonin production.
Finally, make sure that you are getting enough sunlight...if its dismal for an extended period of time, go to a tanning salon and do a few sessions every other day for a couple weeks...its pretty cheap and it really does help.

That's a good one... my girl feeds it to me as a tea.

I've never taken it consistently though cause it makes me really sleepy, but content.

81, thanks for the suggestions.  I'll get some Kava Kava to try out when I hit those really low times.  I'll do a bit of research on the others you provided.

dudetron, how do you take the valerian root?  I've used it for dreaming before in pill form but I don't think it was strong enough to produce any anti-anxiety/depression effects, although I never really was awake after taking it so I can't say for certain.  I have 100mg pills.  Do you use the actual root, and if so what is your method of preparing it?

We're lucky and bought it from a local natural food type store as dry valerian root.

She made tinctures after grinding the root and let it sit in 150 proof alcohol for two weeks.
You can obviously affect strength by using 99% alcohol and tincturing longer.

The recommended dose for drowsy effects is about 15 drops in warm water or tea.
The quality of your root and other factors are very likely to alter your potency.  I would suggest finding a specific recipe of extraction to produce more consistent and known results.

I'd also imagine valerian's dose for treating depression would be less.

It's less effective, but possible to make an infusion (tea) with it. Might also be a more appropriate dose for depression though.

I looked it up a couple days ago and valerian would probably suck for depression...  It's been noted for anti-anxiety use though...

My girl just suggested skullcap for depression... It can be made into a potent concentrate similar to the valerian like I described above with the tincturing...

Good luck fox
