 Fixing my Xbox

Alright so here's the deal...
My xbox gave me the RRoD the other day, not the first time this has happened but now my extended warranty is expired. When I did the repair request online it said I might qualify for a free RRoD fix, if not it would cost $100. So after doing some research online it seems that the 3 year manufacturer RRoD warranty started from my purchase date (6/14/06), regardless of whether I purchased an extended warranty or not.  Is this correct?
Is it just me or does this seem like bullshit that I paid for a 3 year warranty but the free 3 year RRoD ran concurrently with the one I paid for? Anyone have experience with a similar situation?
Basically I just want to know if they'll fix it for free or if I'm better off just attempting to fix it myself. How I'm looking at it right now is I can either...
1)Send it in to MS and have them fix it for $100
2)Fix it myself, upgrade the fans and heat sink for ~$50
Keep in mind I could always go buy a new arcade model for $200 and just put my hard drive on there. So this has me thinking why pay microsoft to fix it and send the same shitty console with the same shitty parts back to me when I could drop 100 more and get a new one with an HDMI port, and a new three year RRoD warranty.
I also get the feeling that the only way I'll be able to play this thing before january is if I fix it myself or just bend over and buy a new one. Last time I sent in an xbox to get serviced they lost it, so who knows how long it'll take especially around the holiday season. Have any of you guys ever done the fix yourself? Tips, suggestions?
