Over the past year I have made it my goal to try and accumulate a nice library of music, movies, ect.
I bought one of those 500 GB externals and have been steadily filling it up to the point where I might have to get another one the next year or so
40 GB of Music
107 GB of Movies
80 GB of TV (All Southpark Seasons, The Office, and 5 years of Daily Show)
> 1 GB in Pictures

I just got a sad feeling that sooner or later all this access to free media and stuff is going to shut down. I hope I am wrong. But just in case id like to have myself a nice library of stuff for the future
Ideally id like to finish filling up this 500 GB drive then get a 1 TB one.

I only have 80 Gigs on my fuckin Alienware... 
My laptop had 145 gigs of music and a few gigs of movies, but the power supply is loose and it won't charge anymore, so i'm without it.

i've got no idea. these are rough estimates as the HD's are in the other room atm.
music - 180 gb or so
movies - 30-40 gb
pictures - 30-40 gbs
my digital drug library is huge too. It's probably 60-70 GB's of videos, lectures, and word/pdfs. thats most of it.

i could easily fill 500
i'm stuck with this 160 external that i traded (and got the better end of the deal i might add)
but i saw a 1.5 tb at best buy for less that 200 i believe. i'd love to get it but i just lost a FUCK TON of money

I've grown to learn that... I bought it several years ago, $1400 so I went low with things when I first bought it. Motherboard fried 3 days after warranty expired and the fuckers wouldn't even TALK to me without paying them $40 then refused to send me a new motherboard and insisted that I spend a shit ton to send it to them...
Almost everything in it is replaced by now, but its still kinda out of date, and the one thing I haven't added to or replaced was the HD.... And that will be next....

Jeez that sucks. One of my rich friends spent near to 2000$ on his Alienware, and I could have built a computer with better specs for like 650-750$.

I downloaded and lost more than that in my dialup years. I need another 500GB External now. Two actually. I don't like to go bigger than that and duplicate each in case of failure. I've been slack lately but I usually leave my comp downloading 24/7 except pausing or slowing it when I'm actively using it online. Like now. Have since the early 90's. I used to only have CDs to back up to and I've got stacks of mixed up unlabled ones with who knows what on them. When the apocalypse comes and I'm stuck in a bunker at least I should well entertained.

That's the whole reason I started my permanent library. I lost all my media several years ago when I had my computer crash
backing up an external is a bit redundant though

Not when everything on the external is the only copy there is. If that external fails a lot of shit is lost. They have gotten cheap enough now to make it worthwhile. I've lost enough in the past to know. Personal pictures are now backed up onto every computer and drive we have after loosing about a years worth once. It would take an EMF bomb to make that one happen again. Even then a lot of them are stored online as well.
Interesting to think about. My first digital camera was $300.00 ~2 megapixels and only held about 24 pictures in memory at the standard setting. My latest one was $100.00 8+ megapixels and holds thousands with the card installed. The thing to be careful about now is to not leave them on the camera without backing it up. I don't. I copy over every session.

I have an external terabyte hd that I picked up for about 100 bucks. All the storage I'm gonna need for awhile.
300 gb filled so far consisting of almost strictly games and music, movies I dl then burn to dvd and delete.

i have mostly music, about 130gb+ i would say, then like 80-100gb of movies and tv and a couple gbs worth of my pictures. and a shitload of ebooks, like seriously thousands. haha.
i used to have a 1.5tb extarnal hdd with even more of everything but i dropped it and it died, redundancy would have been awesome.

well, i don't really read novels often and when i do, it's usually cuz a friend said i should read it and they give me their physical copy. i have a ton of math, physics, chemistry, computer technology, programming books and papers and that's mostly what my ebook library consits of. i got some magazines like guitar world, maxim, scientific american and stuff like that. a big part of it is about drugs too, synths, pharmacology and what not. also have a bunch of philosphy books, books about religion and language learning books. most of them i don't know where i got them but i am a member of a private tracker that focuses on ebooks and it's pretty good. so yeah, i like to read and i love ebooks. 
holy shit just checked that tracker and it's on freeleech. haha here come a couple hundred more ebooks.

Nice. Ebooks are brilliant for college. Just do a search of a term and bingo, straight to the info you need. No crawling through indexes of heavey bastard books. I'm more of a novel man when it comes to ebooks though. I'd love one of those sony readers that are out now. The itouch is too small for reading books from.

Figured I would bump this old thread. I was curious about what kind of ratio's people have on torrent sites
I met someone today that had like a 0.18 and I thought I was slipping up because I had dropped below 1.00
During the 2 years this thread has been running, I had to replace my external with a new one 
I have my new one filled up almost (another 500GB, went with a Toshiba though)

I lost my old demonoid account and had to restart, so my ratio is all fucked.
That, and I tend to only download pretty weird obscure shit from there :hipster: which has no peers and nobody else downloading shit.
TPB I try my best to seed to 1:1 or better, but theres rarely people getting shit from me there too.
I think my old demonoid was at .7, but its because I downloaded all the MST3k episodes and forgot and burned them to a disc and deleted them. That was like 120gb of shit that ruined my good ratio 
As for how much I've got? I have my 500gb external, and its running out quick...

i couldn't say just how much i've been torrenting recently... but i calculated how much my 500 GB HD is filled with music... and out of 107 GB of other random shit (a lot of which is my own music ) and 10 GBs that aren't yet being used (cause of me cleaning up some shit i didn't want anymore, for more room) i have the rest of the near 400 GB to music.

Time to get a new external, filled up my 500GB drive a couple weeks ago and steadily filing up my laptops harddrive
Got almost 600GB from demonoid alone. I have been thinking of making a new account, I dont want to draw any attention as I cross the 1TB mark. I am sure the government focuses on people who pirate the most
