Imma be honest...
    #28393 - 05/13/08 06:21 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

I don't know shit about growing cannabis...

My buddy in Antarctica has about 5 plants growing in a normal closet, they are in small plastic pots, with mircle grow potting soil...

Three of the largest plants have been topped...

They are on 18/6 lighting.

So what's now?

It's kinda confusing...

Find out what's male, what's female?

Trasplant to larger pots?

I think we need alot more lights... and a fan or something...

How long have they been in vegetative growth (18/6 lighting)?

Its hard to say if they need transplanted without knowing the size of the pots they are in now or how big they are.

Basically when you feel they are ready you switch the lighting down to 12/12 and then its flowering time.

Also, if you are wondering about needing more lights, it'd be nice to know how much your friend has now.

Haha that's true.

And this really is a friend...

So it's his kinda his thing... I'm just helping him.

He has one 120w "Natural Sunlight" Grow light directly above the plants and two shitty flouros on the sides.

I'm going to let him borrow two light adding probably 200w, I'm also gonna let him use a small fan I have.

The three plants I topped were 5 inchs before topping and now are 3 inchs, they were cut just above the nodes.

The other two that have not been topped are 2-3 inchs.

The pots are half gallon, I think, probably 1/2 the size of a standard sized paint can.

He waters them every 3-5 days and mists them every couple of days...

So... What should I do next...

Thanks for all the help!

How long have they been growing though? I don't know specifics or too much in-depth on much of this, but it would seem that, with five plants, they aren't getting enough light. The natural sunlight bulb sounds like its a special incandescent or halogen bulb, which don't really add up to anything when growing marijuana. Fluorescents might be adequate, CFL's better, but with five plants I think you would end up needing a lot. It isn't just about watts, its about lumens and the right spectrum of light the plant needs for the stage of growth it is in. Not providing enough will cause the plants to stretch out for light and you won't have as great of yields.

The size of the final pots for them would depend on how long you plan on keeping them in the vegetative state and how big the plants are getting. I think that generally you would want at least one to three gallon pots.

Usually the plants will start showing preflowers (this is how you would determine sex) around four to six weeks in the vegetative state. Letting them stay in vegetative at least to that point is a good idea because its a sign that they are maturing, but its not uncommon to put them into the flowering state much sooner than that, especially if you were growing sativa. The size of the plants will usually double or triple after switching the lights over to 12/12.

Knowing how long they've been growing so far would help determine what your friend should do at this point. Pictures always help. If you know which strain he's running, that'd be sweet. Hopefully someone more experienced can help more.

here's what i would do, especially since you topped. veg the plants until they show sex, this will also allow time for your top to take hold and let the plant branch out and build up strength in the stems. If the plants are around 4-6 weeks old they should be showing sex pretty soon. I'm of the school of thought that you shouldn't flower plants before they show preflowers. I think it's best to let the plant become mature before making it flower.

Get rid of your lights and buy some real CFL's. Those "grow lights" you find at places like walmart don't put out enough light, or even the right spectrum, for your plants to thrive in. Get some bigger pots ready, 1/2 gal might be a good size for seedlings and small clones to sit in, but once you flower them they're gonna need more room. If you plan on growing plants above 1.5 ft i would highly recommend getting at least two gallon pots. Up the volume of the pot if you want your plants larger.

I'm not a fan of MG soil, people have reported ok results with it, but i just don't think it's right for cannabis growing especially if it has those time release ferts in it. You should be ok, but, you may want to consider buying a better potting soil then MG.

Then, once your plants have been sexed, males removed, transplanted, new lights and fans set up, flip the lights to 12/12 and get moving on budding them out.

Oh, also, scrap the 18/6 light cycle and go with 24/0. Your plants will grow 33.3% more on a 24/0 cycle then 18/6. Plants don't need dark in the veg cycle, the more light the better.

for vegetative growth, yes, like i already said a dark period is pointless with plants in veg. Your plants will grow faster using a 24/0 light cycle.

18/6 is fine just wait for the plants to show preflowers which they'll do without you changing to 12/12, kill the males and then switch to 12/12. Won't he be stressing his plants more by switching to a 24/0 and then to 12/12?

no, and like i said before, 18/6 is pointless. 24/0 is more efficient.

That's interesting...

It's time to sex the plants, remove the males, transplant to 2 gallon buckets, get new lights, fix up the grow closet, get some new organic soil, get a fan and then switch lights to 12/12...

Right?

Sounds good!

I just hope my buddy does everything he's supposed to...

I want him to learn about sexing the plants...

Got a good "sexing" link?

http://www.greenmanspage.com/guides/kinds.html

there ya go, that's all you need to know right there in those two pics.  Look at the space between the fan leaf and the main stem (right were the new budsite is coming in) and look for either the hairs or a set of nuts.

Stretch the nuts, care for the hairs.
