but when someone says punk musicians can't play their instruments it doesn't mean that guitar and bass are not instruments, it means that punk musicians have horrible musicianship. This is not a flame because A) its not directed at anyone in particular, and B) its a truth widely acknowledged in the musical community and by ex and current punk musicians themselves. If you allow those old people to convince you that modern musical theory is the only way to create music and anything the deviates from that is bad, than possible you are right.
But fortunately music is a subjective experience- someone can play an instrument well if they get the sound that they want to get out of it, not if it goes in line with what is written down in a book on musical theory. Does music have to be complicated to be good? Or does it just matter that it sounds good to the listener?
