No it can't. You need a ballast. Also you need a reflector that would be productive. Even if you could rig it, I wouldn't. I refuse to use anything that is not UL listed for my intended purpose. I don't need a fire risk, esp one in the middle of a grow. Its about as safe as a noob modifying a chainsaw. Just bad.

 oh that was a good laugh. Way to look for some ingenuity though, but i would follow Ethnoguy's advice. Just get the correct stuff.

You can get a 400w HPS for a little more than $100, everything included. That will grow you some beautiful ladies.
Mary likes mutual relationships, she puts out equal to what you put in.

yeah yeah, sheesh, chill it with the condescension. I was merely looking to save some money, I have an HPS ballast already, just thinking about upgrading

I stay away from cheap stuff. A lot of it comes from China. While it is UL listed, that doesn't mean the components are listed to run together. You get what you pay for.
