These intertwined velvet worms, or onychophorans, are living fossils, holdovers of the Cambrian explosion of life-forms that occurred about 530 million years ago. Velvet worms became land dwellers some 250 million years ago but survive today only in dark, moist habitats such as the leaf litter in Costa Rican forests. These worms were photographed at the University of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany.
Darkness in Antarctica's Weddell Sea gives this comb jelly a chance to show off its candy-colored bioluminescent cells.
A carnival of color, this nudibranch (Chromodoris Kuniei) calls the Sulu Sea in the Philippines home. These sea slugs can be found in environments offering shelter in the tropical waters of the western Pacific Ocean.
Also called a straight ammonite, Bacculite is an ammonite mollusk with a straight, not spiraled, shell.
Prehistoric squid remains have been found near Australia, Germany, and in the Western Interior Seaway, a vast sea that once bisected North America.
Floating along at the whim of ocean winds and currents, Portuguese man-of-wars are a popular food item for sea turtles.
All sea cucumbers are ocean-dwellers, though some inhabit the shallows and others live in the deep ocean.

This shit always gets me to wondering just how developed our planet is in comparison to others. I've always believed in life on other planets...but when I see shit living like 3 miles under the ocean, I have to wonder how developed we are in comparison.
