budding with a metal halide and a few other questions
    #177277 - 01/08/09 12:39 PM (7 years, 10 months ago)

ok so heres the deal i didnt know that a switchable ballast actualy had a switch that had to be flipped in order to change from a hps to mh so i was scammed into buying what i thought was a 400 watt switchable light set up, but it turns out to be only a mh (i got it off craigslist). Now i dont have the money to go out and get a hps light. my problem is that i already went out and got clones and put them under the metal halyde buld and planned to get an hps light bulb when i had more money, well i had more money yesterday so i went and got an hps bulb and when i put it in it didnt work so i searched around the ballast and found where it said mh only. so now i must make due with what i have. i know that you can bud with metal halyde but the buds will suffer a bit as far as weight because of the wavelengths of ligh are more for vegative growth i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to supplimental lighting. i was thinking i would throw like flourescent tubes with high orange light outputover them along with some compact flourescents. i guess what i want to know is if it would be worth it to put in another 200 watts of red/ orange flourescents to help compensate. also i was wondering how much it costs to run a 1000watt hps on a 12-12 schedule for a month because i know someone who would lend me a 1000 watt, i was thinking that maybe i could just run that for the last month of budding. thanks for all the help in advance, josh.

the cost of running it isnt the only thing to keep in mind. how big is your growroom? A 1000w HPS might be too much for the space you got to work with. Although, I have seen some pretty alright lookin buds thats were flowered under MH lights mixed with some CFLs.

it would be difficult, the reason the plants begin to flower is the reddish light that is emitted by an HPS lamp;  The plants react to that light spectrum to initiate budding, as the reddish sunlight @ the end of the day is more pronounced @ the end of summer and into autumn... also 12/12 longer days.    so would the CFLs have to be low on the kelvin scale because MH is a very blue/white bulb when lit.

it would cost around 400$ to run a 1kw for 12/12 for 1month
you can find out exactly if you know how much your electricity costs per kw hour

if you flower with a metal halide you may lose some yield but the buds will likely be denser as metal halides have more penetration... this is just what I've heard I've been wanting to compare for a while now.

also I dont believe green floresents will help you any they don't interupt the photoperiod though so you can turn them on for visible light... but they won't help your plants any.

Sure you didn't misplace a decimal point somewhere?

color has nothing to do with it, not receiving light does.  A plants flowering cycle is initiated by a light cycle change, not a color change.  Growers have been successfully flowering with MH light for years on end with no more difficulty then an HPS.  In fact many old school growers prefer using a MH light over HPS.

Point is, you'll be fine using a MH light to veg and flower your plants.  If you wish to use an HPS in the future save up some cash for it and get a grow under your belt.  At the very least you can sell off the MH at the end of your first grow and buy the switchable for your next.
